Busiest on Mondays around 2 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
The Airport is easy to arrive by bus. Unfortunately most of the staff members are not able to speak english, not even a little bit.... We had business flight tickets and were searching for the business lane. We asked politely even used google translator for communication in Spanish but the staff members at the security lane were very rude. So we walked the back to the Airline check in counter again to ask for help and there we've got the information no business lanes do even exist here at the airport! Why the staff members haven't been able to answer this simple question???? Well... we had to wait at the security lane for a while, fortunately we had brought enough time with us. Later at the duty free shopping area we noticed the availability of cigarettes is rather small. They don't sell E-cigarettes only regular ones. Prices for other things are pretty the same as outside so there is no real discount, like otherwise. The business lounge is average but clean and much quieter than the rest of the airport. The airport is ok, but there are still a lot of things for improvement. 1star=bad 2stars=ok 3stars=good 4stars= very good 5stars=amazing

Honestly a pretty good airport! Easily accessible by public transportation (bus) running regularly into the city. Small enough to be pretty easy with security and such, not too busy. And a surprising amount of places to eat. Moreover at the time of writing (2025) it generally feels like most of the airport is either relatively new or in generally good condition.
Hello Tom Szelag. Thanks for your comment! What did you like most about your experience? You can share it with us through the contact section of the official Aena website (https://www.aena.es/en/contact.html) or by calling 913 211 000. Best regards from the Aena team!
Nice, easy in/out, convenient, everything you need and expect in an airport. Little busy when events are happening like soccer game. Little slow when events are happening especially renting a car. Can use a better AC/terminal little warm. Plan accordingly.

Decent airport w short lines and pretty good food (limited options). They took forever to announce gates so everyone crowds around the monitors and then Makes a mad dash to their gate when it finally comes up.
Hello Heather A. Adams. At Aena, we work every day to improve your experience. Best regards!
Bilbao Airport sits 12 kilometres north of the city centre, in the municipality of Loiu, serving the Basque Country as its primary international gateway. Opened in 1948 and rebuilt into a modern facility, it handles around six million passengers annually, connecting the region to major European cities and a handful of intercontinental routes. The single terminal, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is known for its white, bird-like structure that stands out against the green hills. The airport is compact enough to navigate easily, but it can get crowded during peak hours.
Bilbao Airport is well connected to the city and surrounding areas. The most direct public transport is the Bizkaibus A3247, which runs from the airport to the city's main bus station (Termibus) near the San Mamés metro station. The journey takes about 20–25 minutes, depending on traffic, and buses run every 15–30 minutes from early morning until late evening. A single ticket costs around €3. For those heading to the train station (Abando), the bus stop is a short walk from Termibus. Taxis are readily available outside arrivals; a trip to central Bilbao costs approximately €25–30 and takes 15–20 minutes. If driving, the airport is accessible via the AP-8 motorway (exit 9) and the BI-637 road. Parking options include a paid parking lot and a multi-storey car park directly opposite the terminal. Long-term rates are reasonable, but pre-booking online can save money. The airport is also served by local buses from nearby towns like Getxo and Santurtzi, though these are less frequent.
The terminal is a single three-level building with a clear layout. Arrivals and baggage claim are on the ground floor; departures and check-in on the first floor; and a small mezzanine level houses a restaurant and observation deck. Security screening is on the first floor, and after passing through, passengers enter a long, narrow pier that branches into two concourses for gates. The pier has floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the runway and hills. Facilities include free Wi-Fi (authentication required via SMS or printed voucher from machines), baggage storage (located near arrivals, open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., fees apply), and a wheelchair-accessible entrance, car park, and toilets. There are changing tables in both men's and women's restrooms. The terminal has a few shops: a duty-free, a newsagent, and a souvenir shop selling Basque products. Food options are limited to a café and a restaurant on the departures level; both offer sandwiches, salads, hot meals, and local wines. The atmosphere is functional rather than luxurious. On busy days (Mondays at 2 p.m., Tuesdays at 5 p.m., Wednesdays at 6 p.m.), the pier can feel crowded, especially near the gates. Check-in opens two hours before flights for most airlines. The airport is not open 24 hours — the terminal closes overnight, typically from midnight to 4:30 a.m., so passengers cannot stay inside during that period.
Loiu itself is a small town of about 2,500 people, but its significance comes from being the location of the airport that serves one of Spain's most dynamic cities. Bilbao, 12 kilometres south, underwent a dramatic transformation in the 1990s, led by the Guggenheim Museum's opening in 1997. The museum, a titanium-clad masterpiece by Frank Gehry, remains the city's top attraction, drawing art lovers and architecture enthusiasts from around the world. Beyond the Guggenheim, Bilbao offers a compact, walkable centre with the medieval Casco Viejo (Old Town), home to the Santiago Cathedral and narrow streets filled with pintxos bars — the Basque version of tapas. The city's other cultural landmarks include the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Azkuna Zentroa cultural centre, and the San Mamés stadium, home to Athletic Bilbao football club. The surrounding Biscay province offers green landscapes, fishing villages like Getaria, and the rugged Basque coast with beaches such as Sopelana and Plentzia. The airport's proximity to the city — just a 15-minute drive — makes it an ideal entry point for exploring the wider Basque Country, including San Sebastián (100 km east) and Vitoria-Gasteiz (60 km south). The region is known for its distinct language (Euskara), strong culinary traditions, and a sense of identity that sets it apart from the rest of Spain. For travellers, this means a chance to experience a culture that values quality of life, good food, and natural beauty.
The airport's hours vary by season, but it is generally open from 4:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. It is closed overnight, so plan accordingly if you have a very early or late flight — arrive when the terminal opens. The official website is aena.es/en/bilbao.html. The airport phone number is +34 913 21 10 00, but note that it is a central Aena number, not a dedicated Bilbao desk. For real-time flight information, check the website or app. Upon arrival, the tourist information desk (near arrivals, open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) provides maps and advice. One concrete piece of advice: if your flight is during a busy time (Monday 2 p.m., Tuesday 5 p.m., or Wednesday 6 p.m.), arrive at least two and a half hours before departure to allow for long security queues. Also, the Wi-Fi requires a voucher — pick one up from the machine near the information desk to save time.
