Etihad Airways, designated by IATA code EY and ICAO code ETD, is the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates, headquartered in Abu Dhabi. The airline was established in 2003 by royal decree and commenced operations later that year. It is wholly owned by the Abu Dhabi government through the ADQ holding company, reflecting its role as a key pillar of the emirate’s economic diversification strategy. Etihad’s primary hub is Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), which serves as the central point for its global network. From this base, the airline has grown rapidly from a regional operator into a major international carrier known for its premium service and innovative products.
The airline operates a modern and fuel-efficient fleet composed predominantly of wide-body aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing. Its inventory includes the Airbus A380, A350-1000, and A320 family, alongside the Boeing 777-300ER and 787-9 Dreamliner. Etihad has historically maintained a mixed fleet strategy, phasing out older types like the A330 and A340 in favour of newer, more efficient models. Notably, the airline has invested significantly in the A350-1000, which it uses for long-haul operations, and continues to operate the A380 on select high-density routes, celebrated for its first-class apartments and onboard lounge. The fleet is complemented by cargo operations under Etihad Cargo, which utilises dedicated freighter aircraft such as the Boeing 777F. The airline’s focus on fleet modernisation has been key to reducing its carbon footprint and improving operational reliability.
Etihad Airways operates as a full-service, premium flag carrier, offering distinct cabin classes—Economy, Business, and First—with an emphasis on luxury and hospitality. It does not belong to any of the three major global airline alliances (Star Alliance, oneworld, SkyTeam), but instead maintains a extensive network of codeshare and interline agreements with partners worldwide, including airlines such as Air Serbia, JetBlue, and Korean Air. This partnership strategy allows Etihad to extend its reach without formal alliance membership. The airline is also known for its unique “Etihad Guest” loyalty programme and for pioneering branded First Class suites, such as The Residence, an ultra-luxury three-room suite available on the A380. Over the years, Etihad has received numerous accolades, including being named “World’s Leading Airline” at the World Travel Awards multiple times, and has been recognised for its cabin crew, catering, and in-flight entertainment. Despite facing financial challenges and restructuring in the late 2010s, including the cessation of its equity alliance model that saw minority stakes in other carriers, Etihad has refocused on its core hub operations, increased profitability, and continues to invest in customer experience and sustainability initiatives. The airline remains a symbol of Abu Dhabi’s ambitious aviation strategy and a competitive force in the global premium travel market.
