This is a medium-sized international airport serving as the main gateway to northern Spain. Opened in 1953 and converted to civilian use in 1977, it was renamed in 2015 in honor of Spanish golf legend Severiano "Seve" Ballesteros. Located about 5 km south of Santander, the airport is accessible by E21 city bus to Gipuzkoa Square in roughly 30 minutes. It connects the region with major European destinations such as Madrid, London, and the Mediterranean, and experiences its highest traffic from June to September, driven by beach and pilgrimage tourism.
Hello Seokjin Ham. This motivates us to keep working every day to provide the best service. We hope to see you again soon!
Actually a small provincial airport that is neat tidy and very clean. Staff very good. Security fast and efficient even if its dated. Travelling for the europa league final so even under pressure the airport was excellent
Hello Jason Jennings. We're delighted to hear this and to know that you had a positive experience. The Aena team works to improve every day. We hope to see you again soon. Thank you!
Great little airport. Highly recommended. Short queue for Ryanair bag drop, but no queue at all Security check and found it had efficient passport control on arrival. Easy to get to, the hire car's are right outside (we used sixt and they were very good, none of the common concerns) Only downside was the food choices when through security, very poor in choice and quality and pricey too. Would recommend eating before you get here (not a fan of McDonald's and would avoid normally, but 5 mins before you reach the airport. Wish I'd gone there instead!)
Hello Tim Bowen. Thanks for your comment! What did you like most about your experience? You can share it with us through the contact section of the official Aena website (https://www.aena.es/en/contact.html) or by calling 913 211 000. Best regards from the Aena team!
Small and clean. Very quick to get through but we are here in October! There is one cafe before security and one after.
Hello Helen Robinson-Tsingos, thank you so much for your comment and for trusting us! We greatly value your opinion and hope to see you again soon at Aena. Best regards!
Santander Airport sits 5 kilometres south of the city centre in the town of Maliano, serving the Cantabria region of northern Spain. Officially named Seve Ballesteros-Santander Airport after the legendary golfer, it handles around 800,000 passengers annually – a modest figure that reflects its role as a regional hub rather than a major international gateway. The single-runway facility operates flights to Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, and a handful of European cities, mostly via low-cost carriers. Its compact size means that check-in to gate rarely takes more than fifteen minutes, a luxury that larger airports cannot offer. The terminal building dates from a 2014 expansion, giving it clean lines and an efficient layout. Passengers arrive here for the beaches of the Cantabrian coast, the Picos de Europa mountains, or the cultural attractions of Santander itself.
Santander Airport is easily reached from the city centre and surrounding areas. By road, the airport lies just off the N-611 highway, with journey times of roughly 10 minutes from Santander's city centre in light traffic. A taxi costs between 15 and 20 euros – the official rank is outside the arrivals hall. Public buses run every 30 minutes from Santander's bus station (Estación de Autobuses) to the airport, with a journey time of about 20 minutes and a fare of 2.50 euros. The bus stop is directly outside the terminal. For those driving, the airport has paid parking facilities: a multi-storey car park opposite the terminal and an outdoor lot slightly further away. Both are clearly signposted. Motorists from Bilbao or Oviedo can reach the airport in about 90 minutes via the A-8 motorway. Rental car desks are present in the arrivals hall – companies include Avis, Europcar, and Sixt. There is no direct train connection, but the regional FEVE line stops at nearby Maliano station, about a 15-minute walk from the terminal – not ideal with luggage, but an option for light packers.
The terminal is a single-storey building with check-in desks in the centre, security immediately behind them, and two departure gates on the airside. Arrivals and departures are on the same floor, separated by a partition. The architecture is bright and functional, with large windows letting in natural light. The confirmed facilities include a wheelchair-accessible entrance, wheelchair-accessible car park, and wheelchair-accessible toilet – useful for passengers with reduced mobility. There are standard toilets with changing tables in both arrivals and departures. Baggage storage is available, located near the check-in area – useful for day-trippers who want to explore Santander without luggage. On-site services include a small shop selling snacks, drinks, and newspapers before security, and a café/bar after security. The café offers basic sandwiches, coffee, and beer, but options are limited – consider eating beforehand if you want a full meal. Wi-Fi is free but requires a login through Aena's portal. Seating in the departure lounge is adequate but can fill up during the busiest times: Monday at 9 am, Tuesday at 5 pm, Wednesday at 4 pm, and Thursday at 9 am. These peaks coincide with early morning and late afternoon flights to Madrid and Barcelona.
Maliano is a small civil parish (pedanía) within the municipality of Camargo, located just south of Santander. It is not a tourist destination in itself – its character is residential and agricultural, with fields and farmhouses interspersed with new housing developments. But it is the gateway to one of Spain's most underrated regions. Cantabria offers dense green valleys, dramatic coastline, and prehistoric cave art. The airport's location in Maliano places visitors within a 20-minute drive of Santander's city beach, El Sardinero, and the historic city centre with its Palacio de la Magdalena. Inland, the medieval villages of Santillana del Mar (home to the Altamira Cave) and the Picos de Europa National Park are both under an hour's drive. The region is known for its seafood – anchovies from Santoña, sardines, and the famous cocido montañés stew. The airport itself is named after Seve Ballesteros, who was born in Pedreña (just 12 km away) and whose career transformed modern golf. For the traveller, Maliano itself is quiet – there are a few tapas bars and a small hotel near the roundabout, but most visitors head straight to Santander or beyond. The proximity to the Cantabrian Sea means that the weather is mild but rainy – pack a waterproof even in summer. The airport's limited route network encourages many to fly into Bilbao (100 km east) or Santander itself via connecting flights, but those who land in Maliano get a calm entry point with far fewer queues than a larger hub.
The airport is open daily from 5:00 am to 11:30 pm – it does close overnight, so do not plan to sleep in the terminal. The busiest times are Monday 9 am, Tuesday 5 pm, Wednesday 4 pm, and Thursday 9 am; aim to avoid these windows if possible. Website: https://www.aena.es/es/seve-ballesteros-santander.html. Phone: +34 913 21 10 00 (general Aena customer service). There are no ATMs inside the terminal, so bring cash if needed. The café airside accepts card payments. For passengers with mobility issues, wheelchair assistance is available – request it through your airline at least 48 hours in advance. One concrete tip: if you are flying out, the security queue can be short but unpredictable during busiest times, so arrive 2 hours before domestic flights and 2.5 hours for international. The parking lot charges about 1.50 euros per hour (first 15 minutes free) – the multi-storey is slightly more. For a stress-free experience, use the bus from Santander – it is cheap, frequent, and stops right at the terminal door.
