Busiest on Mondays around 8 am — usually a little busy.
Small airport. Clean. Bus to the center and heading to Bilbao as well - schedule at the airport, and online at https://regular.autobusing.com/venta/index Tickets can be bought online or on the bus. There is a winter and summer schedule. Ticket to the city (bus station or city center) costs 3EU - same online and on the bus. The bus is very comfy. Be careful as the seat is numbered so make sure you sit on your seat - see section marked on the physical ticket.

very simple airport. got all basic stuff and it is around 1.5 hours from Bilbao by bus
Nice airport. Very clean, was a quick process to get through. Staff really polite, friendly and helpful. One of the best airports I've ever been to.
Hello H Edwards. Thank you so much for your comment. At Aena, we greatly value your opinion, as it allows us to continue improving the service and experience we offer every day. We hope to see you again soon!
No publicly available transportation to city center. There is a private company La union that provides rides outside the airport but they only have one bus per flight and if you dont know that and miss it you are screwed. On the way back my flight was the only one and it had a 5 hours delay and the cafeteria was closed despite being lunch time. Everyone had to resort to candy and snacks from vending machines. Even more they dont have enough chargers outside the waiting rooms for the flights that we were kicked out of due to security reasons.
Vitoria Airport (VIT) sits four miles east of central Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of Spain’s Basque Country. It is a compact, single-terminal facility that primarily handles seasonal passenger flights, cargo operations, and general aviation. The airport is operated by Aena and serves as a secondary gateway for the Basque region, complementing Bilbao and San Sebastián airports. Its small size means passengers can expect minimal queues, a straightforward layout, and a calm atmosphere. The airport is closed overnight, with operating hours that align with flight schedules rather than 24-hour service.
The airport’s role extends beyond tourism. It handles a significant volume of cargo traffic, particularly for the region’s automotive and industrial sectors. DHL operates a major hub here, and the airport is also used for aircraft maintenance and storage. For passengers, this means the terminal is often quieter than its regional counterparts, but it also means that flight options are limited – mostly seasonal routes to European cities like Brussels, London, and Mallorca, as well as domestic Spanish destinations. Irregular flights also serve holiday spots under package deals.
Getting there is straightforward. The airport is located about six kilometres east of Vitoria-Gasteiz city centre. By car, take the A-1 motorway and follow signs for Aeropuerto de Vitoria. Parking is available in a large lot directly opposite the terminal, with both short- and long-term rates. Taxis from the city centre take around 15 minutes and cost roughly €25–€30. A public bus service, line A (Aeropuerto), runs from the city’s bus station to the airport, timed to coincide with flights. The journey takes about 20 minutes and costs around €2.50. For those driving from elsewhere in the Basque Country, Bilbao is about an hour away (80 km), and San Sebastián is about 90 km east. There is no direct rail connection, but the city’s main train station is a short taxi ride from the bus stop.
Inside the terminal, passengers will find a single check-in hall, a small security area, and one departure lounge. The airport is wheelchair-accessible throughout, with a dedicated entrance, accessible car park, and accessible toilets. Wi-Fi is free and reliable – simply connect to the “Aena” network, which requires a brief registration. Baggage storage is available for a fee, located near the check-in desks. There are changing tables in both male and female toilets. The terminal has limited food and shopping options: a small café before security and a similar one after security, selling basic snacks, sandwiches, and drinks. There is a car rental desk operated by several companies, and a few vending machines. The atmosphere is functional rather than luxurious; don’t expect extensive retail or dining. Security checks are quick during off-peak times, but busiest periods – Monday 8 AM, Tuesday 10 PM, Wednesday 8 AM, Thursday 8 PM – can see longer queues. The terminal is clean and well-maintained, with clear signage in Spanish and English.
Vitoria-Gasteiz itself is a city that rewards those who stop. It is the capital of the Basque Country’s Álava province and is known for its high quality of life, extensive green spaces, and well-preserved medieval centre. The city’s nickname, "Green City," comes from its network of parks and the Green Ring, a belt of peri-urban parks and bike paths that encircle the city. The old town, set on a hill, features narrow streets, the Gothic-style Cathedral of Santa María (currently under restoration but open for guided visits), and the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, the main square. The Basque Museum of Contemporary Art (ARTIUM) is a modern institution with a strong permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. For food, Vitoria-Gasteiz is a pintxos capital – its many bars along Calle Correría serve small snacks that can compete with those of San Sebastián. The city also has a strong cider (sagardoa) tradition, with several cider houses just outside town offering seasonal tastings. The market at Plaza de Abastos is a great place to sample local produce. History buffs will appreciate the Battle of Vitoria monument from the Napoleonic Wars, and the city’s role in Basque history. Vitoria-Gasteiz is also a hub for outdoor activities: the surrounding mountains offer hiking and cycling, and the Rioja Alavesa wine region is a short drive south. The airport’s location makes it ideal for exploring both the city and the wider Basque Country, though passengers should note that public transport to Barcelona or Madrid requires a bus or train from the city.
Practical Information: The airport is open during flight times; it is not open 24 hours. Confirm with your airline for any flights outside standard hours. Parking: €1.50 per 30 minutes for short-term, €15 per day for long-term. The website (https://www.aena.es/es/vitoria.html) provides live flight information, parking prices, and a map of the terminal. Phone: +34 913 21 10 00 (Aena general enquiries, not terminal-specific). For taxis, use the rank immediately outside the arrivals door. For buses, check the local municipal transport website for current timetables. One concrete tip: if you have a layover of more than three hours, take the bus into the city centre – it is a 20-minute trip and you can explore the old town and enjoy a pintxo before returning. Just allow enough time to clear security again.
