KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, with IATA code KL and ICAO code KLM, stands as one of the world’s most iconic and enduring carriers. Founded on 7 October 1919, KLM is the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name, a testament to its resilience and pioneering spirit in commercial aviation. The airline’s roots trace back to a group of Dutch investors and aviation enthusiasts, with Queen Wilhelmina granting the royal designation “Koninklijke” shortly after its founding. Today, KLM is a subsidiary of the Air France–KLM Group, a major European aviation holding company formed through the merger of Air France and KLM in 2004. The Dutch state retains a minority shareholding, while the airline’s headquarters remain at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. KLM’s operational heartbeat is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, one of Europe’s busiest and most strategically located hubs, from which it orchestrates a vast global network. In addition to Schiphol, KLM maintains a strong presence at several secondary airports within the Netherlands, enhancing its domestic and regional connectivity.
KLM’s fleet is a carefully balanced blend of wide-body and narrow-body aircraft designed to serve its full-service network carrier model. The long-haul backbone consists of Boeing 777-200ER and 777-300ER aircraft, complemented by the more fuel-efficient Boeing 787-9 and 787-10 Dreamliners. The airline also operates Airbus A330-200 and A330-300 variants on medium- to long-haul routes. For European and short-haul operations, KLM relies on a large fleet of Boeing 737-700, 737-800, and 737-900 aircraft, alongside a modern regional fleet of Embraer 175 and Embraer 190 jets operated by its wholly owned subsidiary, KLM Cityhopper. This regional arm allows KLM to efficiently serve thinner markets while feeding its Schiphol hub. The airline also maintains a dedicated cargo division, KLM Cargo, which utilises both dedicated freighter aircraft (such as Boeing 747-400ERF) and the belly capacity of passenger flights. KLM is known for its disciplined fleet renewal strategy, prioritising fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and passenger comfort, with ongoing orders for additional Airbus A321neo aircraft for the short-haul segment.
KLM operates as the flag carrier of the Netherlands and is a full-service network carrier, offering a premium experience in all travel classes, including World Business Class, Economy Comfort, and standard Economy. It was a founding member of the SkyTeam airline alliance in 2000, alongside Aeroméxico, Air France, Delta Air Lines, and Korean Air. Through this alliance, KLM provides its passengers with extensive connectivity, shared lounges, and reciprocal frequent-flyer benefits across more than 1,000 destinations worldwide. The airline also has deep joint venture partnerships with Delta Air Lines and Air France, allowing for coordinated schedules and revenue sharing across the North Atlantic and beyond. KLM’s operational model emphasises innovation, sustainability, and heritage. It was the first airline to achieve IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification and has been a leader in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) initiatives, operating one of the world’s first commercial flights using biofuel in 2011. The airline has received numerous awards, including multiple World Travel Awards for Europe’s Leading Airline and Best Airline Staff, and consistently ranks high for punctuality and customer satisfaction. KLM’s commitment to its “KLM Cares” sustainability programme and its iconic blue-and-white livery remain symbols of Dutch aviation excellence, bridging a storied past with a forward-looking vision for greener air travel.
