Saudi Arabian Airlines, operating under the brand name Saudia, is the national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Founded in February 1945, the airline began operations with a single Douglas DC-3 gifted by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and initially operated under a management contract with Trans World Airlines. Over the decades, the airline has grown from a modest domestic operator into a major international carrier. It is wholly owned by the Government of Saudi Arabia through the Public Investment Fund, which later transferred ownership to the Saudi Arabian Airlines Corporation. As a state-owned enterprise, Saudia plays a central role in the kingdom’s economic diversification and Vision 2030 goals, aiming to connect the country to the world while supporting tourism and religious pilgrimage travel.
The airline maintains a modern and diverse fleet composed primarily of wide-body and narrow-body aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus. As of the mid-2020s, Saudia’s fleet includes the Boeing 777-300ER, Boeing 787-9 and 787-10 Dreamliner, Boeing 747-400 (primarily used for cargo and special operations), Airbus A320-200, A321neo, and A330-300. The airline also operates a dedicated cargo division, Saudia Cargo, which uses Boeing 747-400F and 777F freighters. Additionally, Saudia has a low-cost subsidiary called flyadeal, which operates a fleet of Airbus A320 family aircraft. The airline is known for its continuous fleet renewal programs, including orders for Airbus A321XLR and additional 787s, reflecting its commitment to efficiency, passenger comfort, and environmental sustainability through modern engine technology and reduced fuel consumption per seat.
Saudia’s primary operational hub is King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, which serves as the main gateway for religious pilgrims travelling to Mecca and Medina. The airline also has a major hub at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the capital, and a focus city at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, serving the Eastern Province. Beyond these three main bases, Saudia operates from several other domestic airports, but its network strategy centres on Jeddah and Riyadh as the primary transfer points. The airline’s operational model is that of a full-service, scheduled flag carrier, offering multiple classes of service including First, Business, and Economy, as well as a premium economy product introduced in select long-haul routes in recent years. It complements its regular scheduled flights with dedicated charter operations for the annual Hajj and Umrah seasons, transporting millions of pilgrims from around the globe.
Saudia is a member of the SkyTeam airline alliance, having joined on 29 May 2012, becoming the first Arab carrier to join a global airline alliance. This membership allows the airline to offer its passengers extensive codeshare and loyalty benefits across the network of partner airlines, including Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM, and Korean Air. Over its long history, Saudia has achieved several notable milestones and awards. It was named the “World’s Most Improved Airline” by Skytrax in 2017 and has consistently received a 4-star Skytrax rating for its service quality. The airline has also been recognised for its in-flight entertainment system, digital innovation, and efforts in promoting Saudi culture on board. More recently, Saudia has been actively involved in sustainability initiatives, pledging to reduce carbon emissions and exploring sustainable aviation fuels, aligning with the kingdom’s environmental goals. As the airline continues to expand its fleet and network, it remains a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector and a key player in the global air transport industry.
