AeroMéxico, officially known as Aerovías de México, S.A. de C.V., is the flag carrier of Mexico and one of the most prominent airlines in Latin America. The airline was founded in 1934 by Antonio Díaz Lombardo, initially operating as a regional carrier under the name Aeronaves de México. It began its first scheduled services in the mid-1930s with a small fleet of Stinson aircraft. Over the decades, the airline expanded significantly, and in 1972 it adopted the commercial name AeroMéxico to better reflect its growing international ambitions. For much of its history, the airline was state-owned, but it was privatised in 1988 and later acquired by Grupo Financiero Banamex. The airline’s fleet is composed primarily of Boeing and Embraer aircraft, reflecting a careful balance between long-haul widebodies and efficient narrowbodies for domestic and regional operations. As of 2024, AeroMéxico operates a modern fleet that includes Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX variants for short-to-medium-haul flights, alongside Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliners for long-range international services. The introduction of the 787 Dreamliner has been a cornerstone of the airline’s strategy to improve fuel efficiency, passenger comfort, and overall operational performance. The airline has also been recognised by Skytrax for its cabin cleanliness and crew service, earning four‑star ratings in various categories. In recent years, AeroMéxico has committed to environmental sustainability by modernising its fleet with next‑generation aircraft that reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The airline was also a pioneer in introducing biometric boarding and other digital innovations to enhance the passenger experience. Despite challenges such as the COVID‑19 pandemic and the subsequent restructuring under Chapter 11 in 2020, AeroMéxico emerged stronger, with a redefined business model and a focus on profitability and customer satisfaction.
