Its headquarters are located in Shanghai, and the airline is primarily owned by the Chinese government through China Eastern Air Holding Company, a state-owned enterprise. Over the decades, China Eastern has grown from a regional operator into a global aviation player, driven by China's economic expansion and increasing demand for air travel. In 2010, the airline acquired Shanghai Airlines, further strengthening its position in the highly competitive Shanghai market. The airline's ownership structure also includes strategic investments from international partners, such as Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM, which hold minority stakes as part of broader commercial and alliance agreements.
China Eastern Airlines operates a large and diverse fleet, comprising over 600 aircraft, making it one of the largest airlines in Asia by fleet size. The fleet is heavily centred on Boeing and Airbus narrow-body and wide-body families. The core of its short- to medium-haul operations consists of the Airbus A320 family (including A319, A320, and A321 variants) and the Boeing 737 Next Generation and 737 MAX series. More recently, the introduction of the Comac C919 into its fleet in 2023 represented a historic moment for Chinese aviation, as China Eastern became the launch operator of the country's first domestically built narrow-body airliner.
