Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (IATA: XIY) is the main aviation gateway for the historic city of Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province in central China. It serves a region steeped in ancient history and modern economic growth, handling millions of passengers each year on domestic and international routes. The airport is shared with the nearby city of Xianyang, after which it is named, and acts as a hub for major Chinese carriers, connecting the northwest of China to destinations across Asia, Europe, and beyond. Travelers passing through typically include tourists drawn to Xi'an's world-famous Terracotta Army, business travelers engaging with the region's manufacturing and technology sectors, and students or diaspora visiting family.
The airport is situated in the Guanzhong Plain, about 41 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Xi'an's city center and roughly 13 kilometers (8 miles) from Xianyang city. The surrounding flat, fertile land is part of the Wei River valley, an area that has been cultivated for millennia.

Xi'an Xianyang International Airport serves one of China's most historically significant regions. Xi'an itself was the capital of 13 ancient dynasties, including the Qin, Han, and Tang, making it a cradle of Chinese civilization. The most iconic attraction is the Terracotta Army, a collection of thousands of life-sized clay warriors buried with Emperor Qin Shi Huang, located about 40 kilometers east of the city. The Xi'an City Wall, one of the best-preserved ancient fortifications in China, encircles the old city center, and the Muslim Quarter offers a vibrant mix of food, culture, and history from the Silk Road era.
Beyond Xi'an, Shaanxi Province is known for its diverse landscapes—from the rugged Qinling Mountains in the south to the loess plateau in the north. The city of Xianyang, though smaller, holds historical importance as the site of many Han dynasty imperial tombs. The region is also a major agricultural producer (especially apples and kiwifruit) and a hub for aerospace and manufacturing industries. Travelers come for archaeology, cultural heritage, hiking, and increasingly for business conferences and trade.
Whether you are embarking on a journey through China's ancient heartland or connecting to another destination, Xi'an Xianyang International Airport offers a functional and accessible starting point.
