China Southern Airlines, designated with IATA code CZ and ICAO code CSN, stands as one of the world's largest airlines by fleet size and passenger volume, and is a flagship carrier of the People's Republic of China. Founded on 1 July 1988 following the restructuring of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the airline was originally established as a regional carrier based in Guangzhou. Over the subsequent decades, it underwent significant expansion and ownership changes, eventually becoming a publicly listed company with its shares traded on the Hong Kong, Shanghai, and New York stock exchanges. The airline is majority-owned by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, making it a state-controlled enterprise. China Southern has grown from a domestic operator into a global aviation powerhouse, driven by strategic investments in fleet modernisation and network development.
The airline operates a highly diversified fleet, comprising primarily wide-body and narrow-body aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing. Its inventory includes the Airbus A320 family, A330, A350, and the Boeing 737, 777, 787, as well as the freighter-only Boeing 777F. Notably, China Southern was the world's largest operator of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and has also been a launch customer for several aircraft types. The fleet is complemented by regional jets such as the Comac ARJ21, reflecting China Southern’s commitment to supporting domestic manufacturing. Its operational model is predominantly that of a full-service flag carrier, but it also encompasses a low-cost subsidiary, Chongqing Airlines, and a cargo division, China Southern Cargo, which handles dedicated freighter services. This multi-model approach allows the airline to compete across passenger and freight markets, from premium long-haul routes to domestic economy travel.
China Southern’s primary hub is Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in Guangdong Province, which serves as the airline’s headquarters and largest operation base. Additionally, it maintains major focus city hubs at Beijing Daxing International Airport and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, with secondary bases at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport and Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport. Of these, Beijing Daxing is particularly important as China Southern moved its operations there in 2020, aligning with the airport’s role as a new international gateway. The airline is not a member of any of the three major global airline alliances, but it has pursued extensive codeshare agreements with carriers such as Delta Air Lines, WestJet, and Air France-KLM, as well as partnerships within the SkyTeam alliance through its joint venture with Delta and Virgin Atlantic. This non-aligned strategy allows China Southern flexibility in crafting bilateral partnerships while maintaining operational independence.
Among its notable milestones, China Southern became the first Asian airline to operate the Airbus A380, which it introduced in 2011, and the first Chinese carrier to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 2013. The airline also achieved the remarkable feat of being the first in China to operate a fleet of over 800 aircraft, underscoring its scale. It has received numerous awards for operational excellence, including being named “Best Airline in China” by Skytrax on multiple occasions, and has earned recognition for its in-flight services and safety record. During the early 2020s, China Southern pivoted to rapidly expand its international presence, though its operations remain heavily tied to the domestic and Asia-Pacific markets. The airline continues to modernise its fleet, with orders for the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 777-9, positioning itself for further growth as global travel demand recovers.
