Busiest on Mondays around 11 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
Otherwise a decent airport, not overly cosy, but not too big either. The fact that you can pass security only 2h before flight is annoying, especially since it's quite far from the city so you would have to plan to arrive with a buffer. Cold inside at this time. But great clean toilets and beautiful children's play area near gate 10-11.
Flying in from a Schengen county in the morning was fast and efficient, despite the passport control at the airplane door (an extra 30 minutes lost, but not a big deal. The toilets at the arrivals leave much to be desired. They had just been cleaned but a smell of urine lingered in the air... Departure was swift. Security control was thorough; my boots has to be removed, as in 90% of my trips. In less than 10 minutes I was airside. The duty free section was OK. Good liquor selection, not so much for everything else. Drinking water fountains near the toilets. These had the now-familiar urine smell and a couple of small flies flying around in the cubicle. Seating seemed limited, but it is was late in the day, so no problems there. A small children playground was a nice touch. At this airport, Ryanair employees were enforcing the small bag rule rather fervently, but, hey, if you fly Ryanair, you know what to do.....
Terrible. This is a tiny airport which means you don't need to arrive too early before the flight. However what makes this airport so disgraceful is the security. You're treated like you're in the military whilst passing through security control. I forgot my headphones in one of the trays, and instead of politely calling me back, the man whistled and started shouting at me to come back, and then started questioning me. All for him just to say that I left my headphones in the tray. Then what was all the commotion for? It's like they have a sense of power. No respect for tired passengers at 5am in the morning.
I've had three separate experiences with this airport (two departures and one arrival) and two out of the three have been awful, the third was an arrival from within the Schengen Area so there was very little input from the airport other than baggage unloading (which went well). I have used numerous other airports, two others in Poland. Both Wroclaw and Poznan are excellent airports, both of which I would recommend. I would very strongly recommend using any other airport than Katowice, failing that I would suggest walking, you would be more likely to make it to your destination than taking a flight from this airport.
Miedzynarodowy Port Lotniczy Katowice – Ożarowice, commonly known as Katowice Airport (IATA: KTW), is an international airport located in the village of Pyrzowice, about 30 kilometres north of Katowice, Poland. It serves the Upper Silesian metropolitan area, one of the country’s most populous and industrially significant regions. Although its name references Katowice, the airport is situated in the Ożarowice district, which is part of the Silesian Voivodeship. The airport functions as a hub for both scheduled passenger flights and seasonal charter traffic, particularly to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern destinations. It also handles a significant volume of cargo operations, notably for the Polish courier company InPost and other logistics firms. While not Poland’s busiest passenger airport, Katowice is an important secondary gateway for southern Poland, complementing Krakow Airport to the east.
Katowice Airport offers a range of services and facilities for passengers with reduced mobility. The terminal is equipped with a wheelchair‑accessible car park, wheelchair‑accessible entrance, and wheelchair‑accessible toilets, ensuring that travelers with disabilities can move through the airport with relative ease. Baggage storage is available on site, allowing passengers to securely leave luggage during layovers or while exploring the region. Standard toilet facilities are present throughout the terminal, and there are baby changing tables in the restrooms for families traveling with young children. The airport also provides paid parking lots, with both short‑term and long‑term options for those arriving by car. Other on‑site services include information desks, car rental agencies, and basic retail and dining options, though specific brands or outlets are not detailed in the official amenities list.
Katowice Airport is not open 24 hours a day. The terminal closes overnight, generally aligning with flight schedules. The airport’s peak hours occur late at night, specifically around 11 pm to midnight, when many charter and low‑cost flights depart or arrive. Passengers should plan their arrival accordingly; if you have a late‑night departure, expect the terminal to be busiest during this window. For early‑morning flights, the building typically opens a few hours before the first departure. It is advisable to confirm operating hours with your airline or the airport’s official website before traveling, as schedules may vary seasonally.
The airport’s official website provides up‑to‑date information on flight arrivals and departures, parking, transport connections, and terminal services. The phone line can be used for general inquiries; however, for specific flight or airline questions, it is better to contact your carrier directly.
Katowice Airport is connected to the region by road and rail. A dedicated express road links the airport to the A1 motorway, making it accessible from Katowice, Gliwice, and the surrounding area. Public transport options include buses from Katowice’s main bus station and train services from Katowice and other Silesian cities, with a shuttle connecting the railway station at Pyrzowice to the terminal. Taxis and ride‑sharing services are also available. The airport does not have its own train station directly at the terminal, but a nearby stop serves the regional rail network.
Given the late‑night peak hours, travelers with departures around midnight should allow extra time for check‑in and security, as queues may be longer. The terminal is relatively compact, so navigation is straightforward. For those using the paid parking, it is recommended to book online in advance to secure a spot, especially during holiday periods. Baggage storage is useful for layovers, but check the opening hours of the storage facility, as it may close when the terminal shuts overnight. The airport’s wheelchair‑accessible facilities are well‑maintained, and assistance can be requested from your airline in advance.
