Pelita Air Service, known commercially as Pelita and operating under the IATA code 6D, is an Indonesian airline that traces its origins to 1974. It was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary of PT Pertamina, the state-owned oil and natural gas corporation, initially serving as the company’s dedicated corporate aviation division. For decades, Pelita operated primarily as a charter and executive transport carrier, supporting Pertamina’s domestic and international business activities. In 2022, after a comprehensive restructuring and the acquisition of a scheduled commercial air operator certificate, the airline transitioned into a regular passenger carrier, expanding its role within Indonesia’s aviation market while retaining its strong ties to the energy sector.

The airline’s fleet is composed of modern, fuel-efficient aircraft designed for short- to medium-haul operations. Pelita operates a mix of Boeing 737 Next Generation variants, including the 737-800 and 737-900ER, as well as the ATR 72-600 turboprop. The Boeing 737s are configured in a single-class, all-economy layout, emphasising high-density capacity and operational reliability. The ATR 72-600s, typically deployed on thin routes or airports with shorter runways, complement the mainline jet operations. Pelita has periodically updated its fleet, retiring older types such as the Fokker 100 and the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, to maintain a young and efficient lineup. All aircraft are registered in Indonesia and maintained to national and international safety standards.

Pelita’s primary hub is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, the nation’s capital and largest aviation gateway. The airline also maintains a secondary operating base at Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport, located within the greater Jakarta area. This dual-base strategy allows Pelita to offer flexibility in scheduling and slot management, particularly for charter and ad hoc flights. While the carrier originally concentrated on serving Pertamina’s logistics and personnel transport needs, its recent scheduled service expansion still anchors heavily on Jakarta, leveraging the capital’s extensive connectivity. The airline does not belong to any global airline alliance, preferring to operate independently as a niche player serving both corporate and public passengers.

As an operational model, Pelita operates as a full-service scheduled and charter airline, blending its historical corporate identity with modern low-cost-to-consumer efficiencies. It is not a flag carrier or a pure low-cost airline; rather, it occupies a middle ground, offering competitive fares while retaining some traditional services such as in-flight meals on certain flights. The airline’s ownership remains firmly under Pertamina, giving it a stable financial foundation. Notable milestones include the launch of its first scheduled commercial flights in early 2022, marking a strategic shift from pure charter operations.
