Žilina Airport, officially Letisko Žilina, sits in the village of Dolný Hričov about 12 kilometres southwest of Žilina city centre. It functions as a regional airfield for northern Slovakia's Upper Váh region, handling general aviation, flight training, and occasional charter flights. The airport is not open around the clock and operates on a limited schedule, so anyone planning to fly from here should confirm timings in advance. Despite its modest size, the airport provides essential access to a region known for its mountainous landscapes, industrial heritage, and outdoor activities.
The airport is situated 12 kilometres from Žilina city centre, reachable by several means. The most direct option is to drive via road E50/C1; follow signs for Dolný Hričov and then the airport. Parking is available in the airport's car park, which is free for short stays. Taxis from Žilina take roughly 20 minutes and cost around €15–€20. A public bus service connects the city to Dolný Hričov: take bus number 21 from the main bus station (next to the train station). The bus stops at Dolný Hričov, Hričovské Podhradie, about a 10-minute walk from the terminal. Buses run roughly every 60 minutes on weekdays, less frequently on weekends. For international visitors, the closest major airports are Bratislava (200 km) and Kraków (170 km), both about two hours away by car.
The terminal building is compact and single-storey, designed for low passenger numbers. On arrival, passengers exit directly onto the apron and walk a short distance to the terminal. Departure involves a simple check-in desk, a small waiting area, and a security checkpoint that usually processes passengers quickly — rarely more than five minutes. There are no restaurants, shops, or cafes inside the terminal; passengers should bring their own food and drink for longer waits. The waiting area has basic seating and a toilet (including a wheelchair-accessible toilet). The airport has a wheelchair-accessible entrance and designated parking. The atmosphere is unhurried, with staff who often assist personally with luggage or queries. Note that the terminal can be cold in winter as heating is minimal.
Žilina and its surroundings offer a rich mix of natural beauty, history, and culture that draws travellers year-round. The city of Žilina itself has a well-preserved medieval centre centred on Mariánske Square, with a Gothic church and Renaissance burgher houses. The Budatín Castle, a 13th-century fortress at the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers, now houses a museum of local history. Beyond the city, the Malá Fatra National Park is a prime destination for hiking, climbing, and skiing. The park's highest peak, Veľký Kriváň (1,709 m), is accessible via marked trails from the villages of Vrátna dolina and Terchová. Terchová is also the birthplace of Juraj Jánošík, a legendary 18th-century outlaw akin to Robin Hood, whose story is celebrated in the region through folklore festivals and statues. In winter, the ski resorts of Vrátna, Malinô Brdo, and Športovo-rekreačné centrum Šibenice offer slopes for all levels. For industrial heritage, the nearby town of Kysucké Nové Mesto has a historic cogwheel railway, and the Orava region to the east features the dramatic Orava Castle perched on a limestone rock. The area also produces traditional Slovak crafts, such as wooden carvings and ceramics, which can be bought in local markets or shops in Žilina. The airport's limited schedule means most visitors arrive by road, but it remains a practical entry point for those chartering flights or connecting to private aviation.
The airport is open daily from 7:00 to 19:00 local time, but flight operations are limited and the terminal may be closed when no flights are scheduled. Always check the current opening times on the official website (www.letisko.sk) or call ahead. The airfield is closed on public holidays and may have reduced hours on weekends. Toilets and parking are free. There is no public transport late in the evening, so plan your departure accordingly. If you need a taxi, contact one of the local companies in Žilina before arriving. The airport has no on-site car rental, but rentals can be arranged in the city. One final tip: because the terminal has no food or drink options, bring a water bottle and snacks — especially if you have a layover or waiting for a delayed flight.
