Busiest on Mondays around 3 pm — usually busy.
They have made a few scant improvements on this facility. Don't bother waiting for luggage at baggage claim belt/bay. Instead they have a large flatbed truck (Russian circa 1930's) that they use to bring luggage around to the front of airport. Truck bed is roughly six feet high and one or two people take great care to gently hurl your luggage over your head after you point out which bags belong to you. They manage roughly 12-15 feet from truck as I'm sure they are scattering luggage to keep the crowd thinned out. :-) Anyway, if you travel to places such as this then you certainly should own luggage that can easily survive slipping from the roof of a bus going 79 km/h on a mountain pass, and tumbling 700 feet to the bottom of the ravine. Now for transportation from airport into town. Know you are in for a real treat. The taxi drivers, both men and women will storm those passengers they regard as "whales" to be pushed into their taxi over the competition. A lady won my transport overcharge after beating out another middle aged male driver. Not to be out done, the begrudged man angrily confronted the lady driver as we attempted to depart the taxi area. Still not satisfied, he began to physically a-cost my driver by chocking her and pinning her to the drivers door. She motioned to me that we would be delayed a few minutes, or I thought that's what she was doing. As I sat in the passenger side of car I watched as they now began to roll on the car hood and then as the male driver got the upper hand, he began to punch her repeatedly in the face. I am assuming she tapped me into the " taxi ring" to have a go and spell her or I thought she did. Anyway, I sprang from the car and came over the other side of the hood and restrained the flurry of fists and eventually pinned him to the ground. My lady driver promptly hopped back into her taxi and motioned for me to stop waisting time as I think she had her meter running the whole time. She, nor any other driver actually knew the address that I gave them, in English, for my lodging. After another 1:45 minutes and walking up and down the street asking strangers if they knew where my lodging was located a little girl happily explained to my spartan lady driver where to go and this end my joyous arrival to this less than 5 Star airport.
Was clean. Small but works well. Friendly staff. Migs fly in and out too. Cool to see
Well ordered, efficient
Yanji Airport (YNJ) serves as the primary air gateway to the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province, northeastern China. This relatively compact airport handles a mix of domestic flights to major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Dalian, as well as international routes connecting to destinations in South Korea (Seoul, Busan) and Russia (Vladivostok). The airport caters primarily to leisure travellers exploring the region's unique Korean heritage, business visitors, and ethnic Koreans visiting family. Despite its modest size, Yanji Airport plays a vital role in linking this remote border area with the rest of China and neighbouring countries.
Yanji Airport is situated about 4 kilometres southwest of Yanji city centre, making it conveniently close for most travellers. The journey to downtown Yanji takes roughly 10–15 minutes by taxi or private car. Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals hall, with fares typically ranging from 20 to 30 RMB depending on the destination. There is also a public bus service (Line 28) that connects the airport to major points in the city, including Yanji Railway Station and the central bus terminal. The bus runs approximately every 20 minutes from early morning until evening, though schedules may vary. For those driving, the airport is accessible via the G12 Hunchun–Ulanhot Expressway and local roads. Parking is available in a short-term lot directly in front of the terminal, as well as a long-term lot a short walk away.
The airport serves not only Yanji itself but also the wider Yanbian region, including cities like Tumen (about 40 km east) and Hunchun (about 80 km east). Visitors heading to the North Korean border or Mount Changbai (Baekdu Mountain) often use Yanji as a starting point. Buses and taxis from the airport can connect to long-distance coaches at Yanji's main bus station.
Yanji Airport provides essential amenities to ensure a comfortable experience for passengers with reduced mobility and families. The following facilities are confirmed:
While the airport does not have a wide range of shopping or dining options, there is a small convenience store and a café offering light snacks and beverages. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, though connection speeds can vary. For passengers needing assistance, airport staff are generally helpful, though English proficiency may be limited; having a translation app handy is advisable.
Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture is a unique region in China, known for its vibrant Korean minority culture. The area is often called the "Korean capital of China" because approximately one-third of the population is ethnic Korean. This heritage is visible everywhere: street signs are bilingual in Chinese and Korean, and the cuisine features authentic Korean dishes like cold noodles (naengmyeon), kimchi, and grilled meat. Yanji city itself has a lively food scene and a pleasant riverside setting along the Burhatong River.
Geographically, the region is situated in the Changbai Mountains, which straddle the border with North Korea. The most famous natural attraction is Mount Changbai (known as Baekdu Mountain in Korea), an active volcano with a stunning crater lake (Tianchi). The mountain is a sacred site for both Chinese and Koreans and draws hikers and nature lovers. The nearby border with North Korea is another point of interest; visitors can take tours to the Tumen River border area to glimpse the neighbouring country. Yanbian's climate is continental, with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for travel, with mild temperatures and clear skies.
The region's economy relies on tourism, agriculture (including ginseng and apples), and cross-border trade. Yanji Airport is a key infrastructure supporting these activities, especially as many visitors arrive by air. The airport's international connections to South Korea also help maintain strong familial and cultural ties.
For up-to-date flight information, passengers can contact the airline directly or use third-party flight tracking services. When planning transport to and from the airport, note that taxi availability may be limited late at night or very early in the morning. Pre-arranging a pickup or using ride-hailing apps like Didi can provide reliable options. Overall, Yanji Airport offers a straightforward and functional entry point to a culturally rich and scenic corner of China.
