Busiest on Mondays around 11 am — usually busy.
That's amazing to see Lasha International Airport Terminal 3 is finally into service. Spacious, bright, tidy, comfortable. It's far better and bigger than the aggregate of T1 and T2. So excited to see the fast development and progress of Lsaha city every time when I visit back here. The bullet train also came into service this year from Lhasa to Shigatse and Nyingchi. Congrats! Lhasa!
It is nice but everything was closed at 3 PM when I arrived. No food or concessions. No ATM. It is clean and accessible amd far away from town too.
Probably there's very little international passengers, most facilities were closed n only a small drink store was opened. But the service staff were very friendly and helpful
Small & nice airport, security is stringent.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport is the primary domestic air gateway to the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, and also serves the nearby Shannan region of southern Tibet. Situated in Gonggar County, Shannan Prefecture, the airport lies approximately 100 kilometres southwest of Lhasa city centre, at an elevation of around 3,570 metres (11,713 feet) above sea level – making it one of the highest airports in the world. The airport handles flights from several major Chinese cities, including Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, and Beijing, and is a crucial link for both tourists visiting Tibet and local residents. Its single terminal is compact but functional, designed to cope with the high altitude and often challenging weather conditions. Due to its altitude, travellers arriving from lower elevations may experience mild altitude sickness; it is advisable to rest and hydrate after landing.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport provides a range of essential services to ensure passenger comfort. Wheelchair accessibility is well catered for, with a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilet facilities. The airport also has dedicated changing tables for families travelling with infants, making it easier to care for young children in the terminal. Baggage storage is available for passengers who wish to leave luggage while exploring Lhasa or waiting for a connecting flight. Standard toilet facilities are present throughout the terminal. While the airport does not offer extensive shopping or dining options, basic concessions such as a small shop and snack bar may be open during flight hours. Given the remote location and high altitude, travellers should carry their own snacks and water, particularly if the flight schedule runs behind. Cash is often preferred, though card payments may be accepted at some outlets.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport is not open around the clock; its operating hours are tied to flight schedules, which typically concentrate in the morning and early afternoon. The peak hours for passenger traffic are 10:00 and 11:00, when multiple flights depart and arrive. Outside of these windows, the terminal may be closed or have minimal staffing. It is advisable to arrive at least two hours before a scheduled departure, as security checks and check-in procedures can take time, especially during busy periods. Travellers with early morning or late evening flights should confirm opening times with their airline, as the airport may not be accessible during overnight hours.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport does not have a publicly listed website or phone number for general inquiries. For the most current flight information and operational updates, passengers should contact their airline directly or check with travel agencies based in Lhasa. The airport is operated by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and local tourism offices in Lhasa may also provide assistance. Given the limited direct contact options, it is prudent to rely on airline communications and official notices posted at the terminal.
The primary means of reaching the airport is by road from Lhasa. The journey takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by car or taxi, following the Lhasa–Gonggar Expressway. Shared minibuses and airport coaches operate from Lhasa’s city centre, with departure points near the Potala Palace and other key landmarks. Fares are reasonable, but schedules may be irregular, especially outside peak hours. Taxis are widely available but negotiate the fare before starting the trip. Given the altitude and winding roads, allow extra travel time in case of weather-related delays. Parking at the airport is limited, so if driving, allow time to find a space.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport may be modest in size, but it serves as a vital connection point to one of the most culturally and geographically unique regions on earth. With its straightforward facilities and stunning Himalayan backdrop, it offers a gateway to an unforgettable travel experience.
