Overview

Nyingchi Mainling Airport (also known as Linzhi Mainling Airport) is a regional airport serving the prefecture-level city of Nyingchi (Linzhi) in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It is one of the highest airports in the world, situated at an elevation of approximately 2,949 metres (9,675 feet) in the Mainling County valley. The airport primarily handles domestic flights, connecting this remote corner of Tibet with major Chinese cities such as Chengdu, Chongqing, and Lhasa. Due to its high altitude and surrounding mountainous terrain, flights operate only under favourable weather conditions, and the airport is not open 24 hours a day – its hours are closely tied to daylight and weather windows. Most passengers are tourists visiting the spectacular Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, the Namjagbarwa Peak, and the lush forests that give Nyingchi its nickname 'Tibet's Switzerland.'

Location & Access

Nyingchi Mainling Airport is located about 50 kilometres (31 miles) southeast of the main urban area of Bayi Town (the administrative centre of Nyingchi). The airport sits in the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley, surrounded by steep, forested mountains. Access is primarily by road. A dedicated airport highway, the Nyingchi–Mainling Expressway, connects the airport to Bayi Town and the broader regional network. The drive takes approximately 40–50 minutes by taxi or private car. Public bus services are limited but available; a shuttle bus runs between the airport and Bayi Town during flight times. The nearest major city is Lhasa, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) to the west, but the road journey takes 5–6 hours due to mountainous terrain. Many travellers reach Nyingchi by flying directly from Chengdu (about 1.5 hours) or from Lhasa (about 1 hour). There are no railway connections at the airport; the nearest train station is Nyingchi Railway Station in Bayi Town, which opened in 2021 as part of the Sichuan–Tibet Railway extension.

Nyingchi Mainling Airport is a relatively small terminal, but it provides essential facilities for passengers. The airport is fully wheelchair-accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilets. The accessible toilets are clearly marked and well maintained. Nyingchi Prefecture occupies the southeastern corner of the Tibet Autonomous Region, bordering Myanmar (Burma) and the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The airport itself is a remarkable engineering achievement, carved into the side of a mountain, with a single runway barely long enough for Airbus A319 and Boeing 737 aircraft.

Nyingchi Mainling Airport does not operate 24 hours a day. Its hours are tied to flight schedules, typically opening early in the morning and closing after the last flight departs, usually by late afternoon or early evening. Peak hours are around 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM, when most arriving and departing flights are scheduled. Passengers should check with their airline for exact flight times, as weather can cause delays or cancellations.
