Busiest on Mondays around 2 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
It's a very small n cute airport but few eateries should be there at the departure side. As there is only 1 eatery so the rates are sky high n the food n beverages served there are not worth paying this much amount. Few more eateries with few more good food options is very much required there.

Itanagar Airport truly stands out as a gateway to Arunachal Pradesh and north Assam offering a seamless and welcoming entry to this beautiful region. From the moment I approach the airport, the scenic beauty that surrounds it is absolutely breathtaking, giving a preview of the natural splendor that awaits. The airport itself is efficiently designed, with a clean and modern terminal that ensures a comfortable experience for travelers. Despite its smaller size compared to major airports, Itanagar Airport impresses with its orderly operations and the warmth of the staff. Donyi Polo Airport, also known as Itanagar Airport, is the primary aviation gateway to the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, one of India's most culturally and geographically distinct states. The airport handles domestic flights connecting Itanagar with major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati. Its name pays homage to the Donyi-Polo faith, the traditional religion of the Tani people, which reveres the sun (Donyi) and moon (Polo) as deities. This reflects the deep cultural heritage of the local communities. The airport is a vital transport hub for residents and tourists alike, offering a quicker alternative to the long road journeys from Assam.
Situated in the village of Hollongi, approximately 15 kilometres south of Itanagar, the airport is accessible via the recently upgraded National Highway 415. The drive from Itanagar city takes about 30–40 minutes, passing through scenic landscapes of rice fields and hills. Taxis are readily available from the city, and many hotels offer airport transfers. For those travelling from neighbouring towns like Naharlagun or Doimukh, the airport is a short drive away. There is no public bus service directly to the airport, but shared jeeps and auto-rickshaws operate on the main highway. The airport's location is strategically important as it is one of the few airports in the state, with others at Pasighat and Tezu serving different districts. The nearest major international airport is in Guwahati, Assam, about 10 hours by road, making Donyi Polo a crucial link for time-sensitive travel.
The airport terminal, though compact, is well equipped for a comfortable journey. Accessibility is a priority: the entire facility is wheelchair-friendly, with accessible parking, entrances, seating, and restrooms. Gender-neutral toilets and baby changing rooms are available, demonstrating inclusive design. Free and paid parking lots cater to both short-term and long-term parking needs. Baggage storage is offered for passengers who wish to explore the area without luggage. Complimentary Wi-Fi is provided throughout the terminal, allowing travellers to work or browse. The terminal has basic seating and information desks. While there are no full-service restaurants or lounges, a small kiosk sells snacks and beverages. The airport staff are known to be courteous and helpful. Additionally, the airport is declared LGBTQ+ friendly, fostering an inclusive environment. For those requiring special assistance, wheelchairs are available upon request.
Arunachal Pradesh is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes — from snow-clad peaks to dense forests and winding rivers. It is home to over 26 major tribes, each with unique customs, languages, and festivals. The state is a biodiversity hotspot, part of the Eastern Himalayas ecoregion, with species like the red panda, clouded leopard, and numerous orchids. Itanagar itself offers historical sites like Ita Fort, a 15th-century fort, and the Buddhist Gompa. The region is popular for adventure tourism, including trekking to Namdapha National Park or river rafting on the Siang. The airport serves as a convenient starting point for tours to Tawang, Ziro Valley, and other attractions. The area also has significant hydroelectric potential and is a focus of cross-border trade with Tibet and Myanmar, though travel to border areas requires permits.
