Overview

Tenerife South Airport (IATA: TFS, ICAO: GCTS) is the busiest airport in the Canary Islands and one of the most important tourist gateways in Spain. Located on the southern coast of Tenerife, it primarily serves holidaymakers heading to the island’s popular beach resorts, such as Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, and Costa Adeje. The airport handles a high volume of seasonal charter flights and low-cost carriers from across Europe, making it a key hub for sun-seeking travellers. Unlike Tenerife North Airport, which focuses more on inter-island and domestic routes, Tenerife South is almost exclusively dedicated to international tourism.

The airport operates daily, with peak passenger traffic typically occurring in the late afternoon (around 5–6 pm), when many incoming and outgoing European flights are scheduled. It is equipped to handle large aircraft, including wide-body planes, and offers a range of services to accommodate the flow of tourists year-round.

Location & Access

Tenerife South Airport is situated in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, approximately 60 kilometres southwest of the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Its location on the southern coast places it within easy reach of the main tourist zones. The airport is connected to the rest of the island via the TF-1 motorway, which runs along the southern and eastern coasts. From the airport, it takes about 15–20 minutes by car to reach Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos, and about an hour to Santa Cruz or the northern airport.

By Car: Rental car desks are located in the arrivals hall, and the airport has a paid parking lot directly in front of the terminal, with designated accessible spaces. The TF-1 provides direct access to the airport, with clear signs for "Aeropuerto Tenerife Sur".

By Bus: TITSA (the island’s public bus operator) runs several lines serving the airport. Line 343 connects Tenerife South with Tenerife North Airport, while Line 111 runs between the southern resorts and Santa Cruz, stopping at the airport. These buses are reliable and affordable, with departures roughly every 30 minutes during the day. The bus stop is just outside the arrivals area.

By Taxi: A taxi rank is located directly outside the terminal. Fares to nearby resorts are fixed and displayed at the rank. For example, a trip to Playa de las Américas costs around €25–30. To Santa Cruz, expect to pay €60–70.

Parking: The airport’s paid parking lot offers both short-stay and long-stay options. It is a single, open-air lot with a capacity of several hundred spaces. Accessibility parking is available near the terminal entrance. Payment can be made at machines or via mobile app.

Facilities

Tenerife South Airport provides a solid range of facilities to ensure a comfortable experience for passengers. The terminal is modern and single-storey, with all services located on one level for easy navigation.

• Baggage Storage: A left-luggage office is available in the arrivals area, allowing passengers to store bags for a few hours or several days. This is useful for those with long layovers or wishing to explore without luggage.
• Wheelchair Accessibility: The airport is fully accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilets. Dedicated assistance points are clearly marked, and staff are on hand to help passengers with reduced mobility. It is recommended to request assistance from your airline in advance.
• Toilets and Baby Changing: Public toilets are located throughout the terminal, and all restrooms include baby changing tables. The facilities are kept clean and well-stocked.
• On-Site Services: The airport offers a range of basic services including a pharmacy, a bank with ATMs, and a post office. There is also a small supermarket in the arrivals hall for last-minute essentials or snacks.
• Paid Parking: As noted, the parking lot is conveniently located adjacent to the terminal. Rates are moderate for short stays, with discounts for longer periods.
• Other Amenities: Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal (connection via Aena network). There are also a few cafés and fast-food outlets on the departures level, plus a duty-free shop selling local products like rum, cheese, and souvenirs.

Note that Tenerife South Airport does not have a hotel located on-site, but there are several accommodation options in the nearby towns.

The island’s carnival, particularly in Santa Cruz, is one of the largest in the world. Tenerife attracts tourists year-round due to its stable temperatures, averaging 20–28°C.
