Busiest on Mondays around 4 pm — usually busy.
Everything is fine EXCEPT for the security. They think they can rush passengers and give orders but this is not a military airport, nor Heatrow. Ignore them if you are treatened like this. And for the airport management- do not let them treat passengers like this (10.08.2025)

Aerial gateway to the quietest and most authentic of the Canary Islands: El Hierro! Barely any people around here... a haven of retreat for introverts and those needing a break from the ongoing troubles of the world...
A really pleasant airport. Lots of space, super clean environment and helpful polite staff. We were super impressed with the cafe food and drinks - so reasonably priced for an airport. Not much more than an ordinary bar/cafe - very refreshing compared to usual airport prices! Plane check in smooth and left bang on time. They even have a water dispenser in the departure area to fill your bottle before getting on the plane.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. We'd love to hear how much you enjoyed it. See you soon at Aena.
My second favourite place on the island! My friend got canceled 4 flights, so I had the chance to spend around 10 hours at the bar inside the cute little airport waiting during my holidays. The waiter is kind and knows a lot about weather conditions of the island! Try the octopus salad!! I have to give 4 stars cos the omelette wasn't that good. Thanks! Hope to come back soon!
El Hierro Airport (IATA: VDE) is the island’s only commercial airport, serving the smallest of the main Canary Islands. Located near the town of Villa de Valverde, it plays a vital role in connecting El Hierro to the rest of the Canary archipelago and mainland Spain. The airport is operated by Aena, Spain’s airport authority, and handles primarily domestic flights, with connections to Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Given its relatively small size, El Hierro Airport is efficient and passenger-friendly, designed to accommodate the island’s low but steady flow of visitors and residents.
The airport was built to replace an earlier airstrip and has undergone improvements over the years to meet modern standards. It is classified as a regional airport but is crucial for the island’s economy, facilitating tourism, cargo, and medical evacuations. Despite its modest scale, the airport offers a comfortable experience with essential services.
El Hierro Airport is situated on the northeastern coast of the island, about 10 kilometres east of Villa de Valverde, the capital and main town. The airport’s address is Carretera del Aeropuerto, 38911 Valverde, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. Its runway runs parallel to the coastline, and the terminal building is compact yet functional.
Getting to and from the airport is straightforward. The most common option is by taxi or private transfer. Taxis are available outside the arrivals area, and the journey to Valverde takes about 10–15 minutes. For visitors staying in other parts of the island, such as El Pinar or the coastal areas, renting a car is recommended. Several car rental companies operate at the airport, including local and international brands. The roads on El Hierro are well-maintained, though they can be winding, especially across the mountainous interior.
Public bus services are limited but exist. The island’s intercity buses (guaguas) connect the airport with Valverde and other towns, but schedules may be infrequent, so planning ahead is advisable. For those heading to the port of La Estaca, where ferries depart for Tenerife and La Gomera, a taxi or rental car is more practical.
The airport’s compact layout means walking distances are short. There is a single terminal building with check-in, security, and arrivals all on one level. Parking is available in a small car park right next to the terminal, with both short-term and long-term options.
El Hierro Airport provides a range of facilities to ensure a comfortable journey. The following amenities are confirmed:
Other amenities include a small café or bar (although not confirmed in the provided data, it is common in Aena-operated airports), and basic shops. Given the airport’s size, dining options are limited, so it’s a good idea to eat before arriving or bring snacks. There are no lounges, but the terminal is quiet and uncrowded.
Flight information displays are clearly visible, and the airport has a lost and found office. Currency exchange services are not available on-site, so travellers should obtain euros before arriving or use ATMs in Valverde.
El Hierro is the smallest and most remote of the Canary Islands, known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, pristine waters, and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. The island’s rugged terrain, with cliffs, forests, and volcanic cones, makes it a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. The island is also a renowned diving destination, particularly for the marine reserve of Mar de las Calmas, where visibility is excellent and marine life is abundant.
The island’s economy relies heavily on tourism, agriculture (especially cheese, wine, and tropical fruits), and fishing. El Hierro is famous for its completely renewable energy system, powered by wind and hydro, and is a global model for sustainability. The island’s small population (around 11,000) ensures a tranquil, uncrowded experience.
Visitors come to El Hierro for its quiet beaches like Playa de la Maceta, the natural pools at El Tamaduste, and the hiking trails in the Garajonay National Park (on La Gomera, but accessible by ferry). The island is also a gateway for observing the stars, as it has one of the world’s best night skies, protected by strict light pollution regulations.
The airport is the main entry point for tourists arriving by air, while ferries from Los Cristianos (Tenerife) or San Sebastián de La Gomera provide alternative sea routes. Flight times from Tenerife are about 30–45 minutes, making El Hierro an easy side trip from the larger islands.
El Hierro Airport may be small, but it serves as a welcoming gateway to one of Spain’s most unspoilt islands. With essential amenities and efficient operations, it provides a stress-free start or end to any visit.
