Arkefly, operating under the IATA code OR and ICAO code TFL, was a Dutch charter airline that played a significant role in the European leisure travel market. Founded in 2003, the airline was established as a subsidiary of the TUI Group, one of the world’s largest tourism and travel companies. Initially known as Arkefly, it was rebranded in 2013 to TUI fly Netherlands, aligning with TUI Group’s strategy to unify its airline brands under the TUI fly banner. The airline’s ownership remained firmly within the TUI Group throughout its operational life, ensuring strong integration with the group’s tour operating and vacation services. This structure allowed Arkefly to focus on serving leisure travelers, primarily those booking package holidays through TUI’s extensive network.
The fleet of Arkefly was composed largely of narrow-body and medium-haul wide-body aircraft, tailored to the demands of high-density holiday routes. Over its years of operation, the airline operated a mix of Boeing 737 variants, including the 737-700, 737-800, and later the 737 MAX 8, as well as the larger Boeing 767-300ER for longer leisure destinations. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was also introduced toward the end of its independent branding period, reflecting TUI’s commitment to fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. The fleet was configured with a single-class layout, maximizing capacity for the leisure market, with a focus on seat pitch and in-flight service that catered to holidaymakers rather than business travelers. Aircraft were maintained to high safety standards in line with European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations and underwent regular interior refreshes to keep the onboard experience competitive.
The airline’s main hub was Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, a major European gateway that provided connectivity to a vast array of leisure destinations across the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, North Africa, and other popular holiday regions. While Arkefly did not maintain secondary hubs in the traditional sense, it operated from several other Dutch airports, including Rotterdam The Hague Airport and Eindhoven Airport, to serve regional demand. These bases allowed the airline to offer convenient departures for passengers outside the Amsterdam metropolitan area, though Schiphol remained the primary operational center where the majority of flights and maintenance activities were concentrated. The airline’s operational model was strictly that of a charter and leisure carrier, not a low-cost or scheduled flag carrier. It did not join any global airline alliances, as its business model was centered on seasonal and year-round charter flights sold primarily through TUI tour operators and other travel partners, often on a seat-only basis in addition to package holidays.
Notable milestones in Arkefly’s history include its rapid expansion in the mid-2000s, quickly becoming a key player in the Dutch leisure aviation market. It was one of the first airlines in the Netherlands to introduce the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 2015, under the TUI fly branding, which brought significant improvements in fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. The airline also invested in modernizing its fleet with the Boeing 737 MAX 8, though deliveries were delayed due to the global grounding of that aircraft type in 2019. Arkefly received industry recognition for its operational reliability and customer satisfaction, particularly within the holiday charter sector. Its transition to TUI fly Netherlands marked the end of the Arkefly name, but the airline continues to operate as an integral part of the TUI Group’s aviation division, serving millions of leisure passengers annually from its Amsterdam base. Throughout its existence, Arkefly maintained a strong focus on safety and service quality, earning a reputation as a trusted Dutch leisure carrier before its rebranding.
