Gwangju Airport (IATA: KWJ) is a domestic airport serving the city of Gwangju and the broader Honam region in southwestern South Korea. It is one of the key air travel hubs on the Korean Peninsula, primarily handling flights to and from Seoul (Gimpo International Airport) and Jeju International Airport. The airport also sees seasonal and charter services to other domestic destinations, and occasionally international charter flights. It is a vital link for business travelers, tourists, and residents connecting the region's cultural and economic hubs to the rest of the country.
Gwangju Airport is situated in Gwangsan-gu, approximately 11 kilometers west of downtown Gwangju. The airport's address is 420-25 Sangmu-daero, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, South Korea. It lies conveniently close to major transportation arteries, including the Honam Expressway, making it accessible by car from nearby cities such as Mokpo (about 60 km southwest), Naju (25 km east), and Suncheon (70 km southeast).
Public transport options are robust. Several airport limousine and city bus routes connect the terminal to key points in Gwangju city center, including the Gwangju Bus Terminal and Gwangju Songjeong Station (a major Korail stop for KTX high-speed trains). Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals hall, with a journey to downtown Gwangju taking roughly 20–30 minutes. For those driving, the airport has parking facilities, and the access roads are well signed from the expressway.
The airport's proximity to Gwangju's central districts and the Honam railway line makes it a convenient choice for passengers connecting to other parts of the region, including the southern coastal cities and the scenic Jeollanam-do province.
Gwangju Airport offers a range of amenities focused on passenger comfort and accessibility. Key confirmed facilities include:
In addition to these, the terminal has a small selection of shops and snack bars, though options are limited compared to larger international airports. Passengers will find basic convenience stores, a café, and a few local food outlets serving Korean dishes. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal. The airport also has a business center and a lounge, though these may have limited hours. For those with time to spare, there are seating areas with views of the runway.
Gwangju is the sixth-largest city in South Korea and serves as the cultural, educational, and administrative center of the Honam region. The city is historically significant as the birthplace of the South Korean democracy movement, commemorated at the May 18th National Cemetery and the Gwangju Democracy Park. It is also known for its vibrant arts scene, including the Gwangju Biennale, one of Asia's premier contemporary art exhibitions.
Beyond the city, the wider Jeollanam-do province is renowned for its natural beauty. Key attractions include the Boseong Green Tea Fields, the bamboo forests of Damyang, and the coastal islands of Dadohaehaesang National Park. The region is also famous for its cuisine, particularly the rich flavors of Jeolla-style Korean food, such as tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) and bibimbap from the nearby city of Namwon.
Travelers use Gwangju Airport to access these destinations efficiently. The airport is also a gateway for business travelers involved in the region's manufacturing and agricultural industries, as well as for families visiting relatives in the Honam area.
