"This airport was the site of the tragic Jeju Air Flight 1229 disaster (Dec 29, 2024). Families are still waiting for truth and justice. Safety must come first before profit."
If you want to go to Gwangju, Mokpo or Muan by bus please see the Bus time table in picture are below. But... If arrival time of your flight do not match with bus time table, You can use the taxi direct to Muan bus terminal with price 17,000 KRW (about 16 USD) and you can go to Gwangju or Mokpo by bus from Muan Bus Terminal. Don't worry.
This airport is not busy. I also gifted a set of tooth brush and paste here. I'm so happy
Information was not open and numerous foreigners had questions regarding bus times, taxis etc. No one was there to take questions or help. Very unimpressive for an international airport.
Muan International Airport (IATA: MWX) serves as the primary international gateway for the southwestern region of South Korea, particularly the Jeollanam-do province. While Gwangju Airport handles most domestic flights, Muan has taken on the role of an international hub for the area, accommodating charter flights and low-cost carriers connecting to destinations in Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. The airport also handles seasonal charter traffic and cargo operations. It is a relatively modern facility, designed to relieve congestion at the larger hubs and to support regional tourism and economic development. As an international airport, it sees a mix of leisure travellers visiting the scenic southwestern coast and business passengers involved in the region's agricultural and industrial sectors.
Muan International Airport is located in Muan County, about 35 kilometres northwest of Gwangju, the largest city in Jeollanam-do, and approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Mokpo, a major port city. The airport sits on reclaimed land near the Yellow Sea coast, close to the Muan Peninsula. For travellers, the most common access is by car or taxi via the Expressway 1 (Gyeongbu Expressway extension) or local highways. A direct bus service connects the airport to Gwangju's U-Square Bus Terminal, with a journey time of about 40 minutes. There are also buses to Mokpo and other nearby cities like Naju and Hampyeong. For those driving, the airport has ample parking facilities, including short- and long-term options. The nearest KTX high-speed rail station is Gwangju Songjeong Station, about 30 minutes away by taxi, offering connections to Seoul and other major cities.
Muan International Airport provides essential facilities for passengers, though amenities are limited compared to larger international hubs. The terminal has clean and well-maintained toilets, located in the arrivals and departures areas. A small selection of shops offering local souvenirs and convenience items is available, along with a few casual dining options serving Korean and Western fare. Free Wi-Fi is offered throughout the terminal, and there are charging stations for electronic devices. The airport also features a duty-free shop for international travellers, though selection may be limited. Business facilities include a small meeting room and a lounge area. Note that there is no dedicated children’s play area or shower facilities. The terminal is compact, making navigation easy for passengers.
The southwestern region of South Korea, known as Honam, is rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. Jeollanam-do is famous for its agricultural bounty, including rice, barley, and the region's renowned green tea from Boseong. The coastline features stunning tidal flats and islands such as the Dadohaehaesang National Park. Mokpo, the nearest major city, is a historic port with attractions like the Mokpo Modern History Museum and the Udal Mountain hiking trails. Gwangju, the provincial capital, is known for its role in the democracy movement and hosts the Gwangju Biennale art exhibition. Other nearby draws include the Boseong Green Tea Fields, the Hampyeong Butterfly Festival, and the scenic Yeongam coastline. The area is also celebrated for its seafood, especially in the port towns. For international travellers, the region offers a less crowded but authentic Korean experience, with easy access from Muan Airport.
Muan International Airport is not open 24 hours; its operating hours vary, and it is closed on certain days. Passengers should check the airport's official website or call ahead to confirm flight schedules and terminal access. The website (https://www.airport.co.kr/muan/main.do) provides up-to-date information on arrivals and departures, transport, and parking. For inquiries, the airport operates a customer service hotline at +82 1661-2626. The airport features a single terminal with both domestic and international zones. Baggage claim is efficient, and customs clearance is typically quick. Currency exchange counters and ATMs are available in the arrivals hall, but it is advisable to have some Korean won on hand. Wheelchair assistance and other special services can be arranged through airlines or the airport's information desk. Parking fees are reasonable, and the short-term lot offers free access for the first 15 minutes. For those connecting to other parts of Korea, consider taking the bus to Gwangju Songjeong Station for KTX high-speed rail services to Seoul and Busan.
