Pretty crazy that an international airport in a first world country, like South Korea is only open for set times. definitely a first for me, My spouse and others had to sleep or wait outside the airport with mosquitoes. Especially for tourist who have certain allocated checkout times. Seen better in 3rd world countries.
On 21 March, 2025, our party of eight arrived here direct from Hong Kong. On passport control, waiting time was reasonable, and there was no need to show the e-confirmation of preregistration of the person. Green customs channel was friendly. On 27 March, 2025, our party of six returned (two members left earlier). Before checking in, we first went to the loss and found to pick up a lost smartphone of one member who left earlier; then, we did the tax refund registration at an e-kiosk. After checking in and while passing through security clearance, two bags of kimchi couldn't be carried on board and we surrendered them. After security clearance, we went to a tax refund counter to get cash refund (in won, yen or US$) and then used some of the refund to buy kimchi again at Lotte Duty Free. We're content.
I was genuinely surprised and disappointed by the experience at Busan's Gimhae International Airport. The lines were extremely long and moved painfully slowly -- from check-in to security to immigration. The entire process felt disorganized and inefficient, and it took far longer than it should have. For a country as developed and technologically advanced as South Korea, this level of service is far below expectations. There was little communication or guidance, and the lack of staff only made things worse. Travelers were visibly stressed and confused, and there didn't seem to be any urgency to improve the flow. I sincerely suggest the airport authorities look to countries like Singapore as a benchmark. Despite handling a much larger volume of passengers, Singapore's Changi Airport operates with such speed and efficiency that you almost never have to wait in line. It's a world-class example that Gimhae Airport could learn a lot from. Busan deserves a better international gateway, one that truly reflects the modernity and efficiency South Korea is known for.
The place is clean and well organized except for the immigration, they took very long time and only let Korean people go first. Foreigner line was at least 1 hr waiting. Please improve this issue.
Gimhae International Airport (also known as Busan International Airport) is the primary air gateway for the southeastern region of South Korea, particularly the city of Busan and the surrounding Gyeongsangnam-do province. Located in Gangseo-gu, about 15 kilometers west of Busan's city center, it serves as the country's second-busiest international airport after Incheon in Seoul. The airport handles a mix of domestic and international flights, connecting the region to major cities in Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and beyond. With its modern facilities and steady passenger traffic, Gimhae is a key transportation hub for both business and leisure travelers.
Gimhae International Airport does not operate 24 hours a day. The busiest times are in the early morning, with peak hours at 7 AM and 8 AM, when many international and domestic departures are scheduled. Passengers should plan to arrive well in advance during these periods, as security and check-in lines can be longer. Outside of peak hours, the terminal remains open for passengers with flights, but facilities such as shops and dining may have limited hours. It is advisable to check your flight's specific terminal and gate information before arriving.
The airport offers a range of services to ensure a comfortable journey for all passengers. For accessibility, the terminal features a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilets, as well as accessible facilities throughout. A dedicated baggage storage service is available, allowing travelers to store luggage securely while exploring the area during layovers. Restrooms are well-maintained and include changing tables for families with infants. Additional on-site services include information desks, currency exchange, and ATM machines.
For those traveling by private vehicle, the airport provides paid parking lots with both short-term and long-term options. The parking facility is located close to the terminal building and is wheelchair-accessible. While there are no details on specific shopping or dining outlets in the provided data, the terminal typically includes convenience stores, coffee shops, and eateries offering Korean and international cuisine. Duty-free shops are available in the international departure area.
Passengers can also find free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal, along with charging stations for electronic devices. For those requiring medical assistance, a first aid station is located within the terminal.
For inquiries regarding flight schedules, baggage, or general assistance, passengers can contact the airport's customer service center at +82 1661-2626. The official website (https://www.airport.co.kr/gimhae/index.do) provides up-to-date information on flights, parking, and services. The website is available in Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese, making it accessible for international travelers.
Gimhae Airport is well-connected to Busan and nearby cities by public transportation. The Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit (BGL) line runs directly to the airport, linking it to major subway stations such as Sasang and Daejeo. Express and local buses also serve the airport, with routes to Busan city center, Haeundae, and neighboring towns. Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals area, with fares to central Busan taking approximately 30–40 minutes depending on traffic.
For passengers driving, the airport is accessible via the Namhae Expressway and local roads. The paid parking lot charges by the hour or day, with rates clearly posted at the entrance. It is recommended to reserve parking in advance during peak travel seasons.
Gimhae International Airport offers a functional and passenger-friendly experience with essential amenities and convenient transport links. Whether you are arriving for a business trip or starting a holiday in Busan, the airport's services aim to make your journey smooth. Always check your flight status and terminal information before departure, as schedules can change.
