Aerodromio Ko «Ippokratis», commonly known as Kos Airport, is the main gateway to the Greek island of Kos in the Dodecanese archipelago. Named after the ancient physician Hippocrates, who was born on the island, the airport serves both scheduled and charter flights, connecting Kos to major European cities, especially during the summer tourist season. The airport is primarily used by leisure travellers heading to the island’s beaches, archaeological sites, and resorts. It also handles a moderate volume of general aviation traffic.
Kos Airport is situated near the village of Antimachia, approximately 8 kilometres east of the southern coast and about 24 kilometres southwest of the island’s main town and port, Kos Town. The airport is well positioned for reaching the popular tourist destinations along the northern and western coasts, such as Tigaki, Marmari, Mastichari, and Kardamena.
By car, the drive from Kos Town to the airport takes about 25 minutes via the main road (EO Kos-Antimachia). Taxis are readily available at the rank outside arrivals, with fixed fares to most resorts (confirm with driver). Several car rental agencies have desks in the terminal, offering a convenient option for exploring the island independently. Public bus services connect the airport to Kos Town and major resorts during the daytime, with schedules aligned to flight arrivals. The bus stop is located just outside the terminal building.
Kos Airport provides a range of services to ensure a comfortable journey for passengers with reduced mobility. The terminal is equipped with wheelchair-accessible car parks, entrances, seating, and toilets, making navigation straightforward for those with disabilities.
For convenience, the airport offers baggage storage facilities, allowing travellers to temporarily leave luggage while exploring or waiting. Clean and well-maintained toilets are available throughout the terminal, including baby changing tables for families with infants. Free Wi-Fi is accessible in the public areas, enabling passengers to stay connected before their flight.
While the airport does not have a wide array of shops or dining options, a small café and a duty-free shop are present in the departures area. ATM machines are located in the arrivals hall. The terminal is compact, so all services are within a short walking distance.
Kos is one of the most historically rich islands in Greece, famously known as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. The island’s heritage is visible at the Asklepion, an ancient healing centre, and in the ruins of the Ancient Agora and the Castle of the Knights in Kos Town. Beyond history, Kos boasts stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters, from the organised sand strips of Tigaki to the volcanic black sands of Therma. The island is also a destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing at areas like Kefalos Bay. Kos offers a blend of cultural exploration, nature, and nightlife, drawing visitors from across Europe.
Kos Airport serves as a modern and efficient entry point to an island that seamlessly combines ancient wonders with Mediterranean charm. Its facilities cater to the needs of leisure travellers, and its location provides easy access to the island’s main attractions.
