Busiest on Mondays around 11 am — usually as busy as it gets.
Fast processing and baggage claim. Friendly staff. Seems to be lately renovated. Good passenger processing and friendly security staff. Clean toilets. Loved it.
Thank you for your kind words !
It's an airport in keeping with the city: clean, small, yet operational, and seemingly modern. What's absolutely incomprehensible is that during the peak tourist season, there is NO public bus connection between the city and the airport. Although the airport's own website indicates this, it's false information. You have to take a taxi (minimum EU40) or a rental car, which is difficult if you arrive after the closing time of many of the companies that operate there (9 p.m.).
Having people to wait for a long period of time outside (for the bus to take them to the plane) for absolutely no obvious reason during a heatwave makes absolutely no sense! Other than that the airport staff are polite and professional :)
A cute little airport 29 km East from Kavala. The parking is free for the 1st 20 minutes, however does not have shades, which means your car will burn in the sun during the Summer months if left there while you travel to another city. There is no public transport to/from Kavala or Xanthi. There are car rental offices of Hertz and Budget, as well as an overpriced coffee shop offering a large selection of hot and cold drinks, as well as sandwiches, pitas, etc.
Kavala Airport "Alexander the Great" (KVA) serves as the primary air gateway for the city of Kavala and the broader region of eastern Macedonia and Thrace in northern Greece. It is a medium-sized regional airport handling a mix of scheduled domestic flights and seasonal international charter services, particularly during the summer months when tourists flock to the nearby beaches and archaeological sites. The airport is named after the famous ancient Macedonian king, reflecting the region's deep historical roots. While not a major hub, it provides a convenient and efficient entry point for travellers heading to Kavala, the island of Thasos (via the nearby ferry port), and the surrounding areas known for their natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Kavala Airport is situated approximately 30 kilometres east of the city of Kavala, near the town of Chrysoupolis and close to the mouth of the Nestos River. Its location makes it well placed for reaching several destinations:
Access to the airport is straightforward: the main road is well signposted from the Egnatia Odos. Parking is free and located immediately in front of the terminal, making it easy for those dropping off or picking up passengers.
Kavala Airport is compact but provides essential services for a comfortable journey. The confirmed amenities include:
Additional facilities include a small café/snack bar in the departures lounge, a duty-free shop (open during flight times), and car rental desks from major companies. The airport’s single terminal handles both arrivals and departures on one level, making navigation simple. There is no hotel on site, but a few options exist in Chrysoupolis and along the coastal road.
The area around Kavala Airport is rich in geographic and cultural attractions. The airport lies on the delta of the Nestos River, a protected wetland of international importance that is home to rare bird species and lush vegetation. The Nestos Delta is a haven for nature lovers, offering walking trails, birdwatching, and boat excursions along the river.
To the south lies the Aegean Sea, with long sandy beaches such as Batis, Palio, and the popular resort of Nea Peramos. The island of Thasos, just a short ferry ride away, is known for its pine‑clad mountains, olive groves, and beautiful beaches.
History enthusiasts will find much to explore in the region. The ancient city of Philippi (a UNESCO World Heritage site) is about 15 km northwest of Kavala, featuring a well‑preserved Roman forum, theatre, and the site of the Battle of Philippi. Kavala itself has a Byzantine castle, an aqueduct built by the Ottomans, and a charming old quarter (Panagia) with cobbled streets and traditional houses.
The region is also known for its agricultural products, including olives, honey, and the famous Kavala kourabiedes (almond shortbread). The cuisine is a highlight, with fresh seafood, local cheeses, and hearty meze.
Planning ahead is essential: confirm your airline’s check‑in times, and if travelling during the peak summer season, consider arriving early to allow for potential queues at security. Kavala Airport’s small size means a smooth and stress‑free experience for most passengers, whether you are starting a holiday in the sun or a cultural journey through northern Greece.
