Small airport inside the city. Easy to board the plane with less complexity. Pretty basic.
it is a very small airport and not many trips happen. The staff that will cause it is not very interested. In addition, although the city center is close, public transportation options are not very developed. I came from Ankara with the evening plane, I could not find a minibus or something. I had to take a taxi. . As an airport, security is important, but as if we came across inexperienced new security, we were not confused in the clean place. . Clean and hygienic only security guard ladies can be a little harder softer and moderate
They opened up both ends of the plane so we could get off on the tarmac. We walked straight into the building and straight out the other side. There were cabs ready. It's seriously took me less than 5 minutes to get off of the plane and in a cab. What's even better, after paying the insane prices in Istanbul for cabs it was actually a reasonable price here.
A small yet Quiet and clean AirPort. There is only one flight to the capital a day, even less three or four days a week during winter.
Canakkale Airport (IATA: CKZ) serves the historic city of Canakkale in northwestern Turkey. It is a domestic airport handling flights from major Turkish cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. The airport is a gateway for tourists visiting the ancient site of Troy, the Gallipoli battlefields, and the scenic Dardanelles Strait. Though relatively small, it provides essential connectivity for both leisure and business travellers. The airport operates under the state-owned General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ). Given its regional importance, the airport is often used by passengers on their way to the Gallipoli Peninsula historic national park or those exploring the cultural heritage of the Troad region.
Canakkale Airport is located approximately 2 kilometres east of Canakkale city centre, in the Çan district. Its proximity to the city makes it convenient for travellers. The airport lies on the southern shore of the Dardanelles Strait, with views across the water to the Gallipoli Peninsula. The main highway connecting Canakkale to Istanbul (D-200/E-87) passes nearby, providing easy road access.
By Car: The airport is a short drive from downtown Canakkale. A paid parking lot is available on site for those driving. Rental car services can be found at the airport terminal, though it is advisable to book in advance during peak tourist season.
By Taxi: Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals area. The journey to the city centre typically takes less than 10 minutes. Fares are metered, and it is wise to confirm the approximate cost before starting the trip.
By Bus/Shuttle: Some hotels in Canakkale offer shuttle services, and there are municipal buses that serve the airport route. However, schedules may be limited, so checking times beforehand is recommended. The airport’s small size means that public transport options are not as frequent as in larger cities.
For those heading to the Gallipoli Peninsula or Troy, the airport is an ideal starting point. Ferry services across the Dardanelles to Eceabat and Kilitbahir are available from Canakkale port, with frequent crossings.
Despite its modest size, Canakkale Airport offers several amenities to ensure passenger comfort.
Accessibility: The airport is wheelchair-accessible, with designated parking spaces, an accessible entrance, and accessible toilets. This makes it suitable for travellers with reduced mobility.
Baggage Storage: A baggage storage service is available, useful for passengers who wish to explore the city briefly during a layover.
Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the terminal, allowing travellers to stay connected while waiting.
Toilets and Changing Tables: Clean toilet facilities are available, including a baby changing table in the restroom area, which is convenient for families with young children.
Parking: The airport offers a paid parking lot for short-term or long-term stays. Payment can usually be made at automated machines or at the booth.
What the airport lacks in size it makes up for in efficiency. The single terminal handles departures and arrivals on one level, making navigation straightforward.
Canakkale Airport serves a region steeped in history and natural beauty. The city of Canakkale lies on the eastern shore of the Dardanelles Strait, a narrow waterway connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara. This strategic location has made the area a crossroads of civilizations for millennia.
Historical Significance: The Troad region is famous for the ancient city of Troy, a UNESCO World Heritage site located about 30 km south of Canakkale. The legendary Trojan War, immortalized by Homer in the Iliad, is set here. The archaeological site features layers of settlements from the Bronze Age to the Roman period.
Gallipoli Campaign: On the western side of the Dardanelles lies the Gallipoli Peninsula, site of the 1915 Gallipoli Campaign during World War I. The battlefields and memorials attract thousands of visitors annually, particularly from Australia and New Zealand, who come to honour the ANZAC forces. The Gallipoli Historical National Park preserves the landscape and commemorates the soldiers who fought there.
Natural Attractions: The region also boasts scenic coastline, thermal springs, and olive groves. The island of Bozcaada (Tenedos) is a short ferry ride away, known for its vineyards, beaches, and Greek architecture. The Kazdağı (Mount Ida) range, famous in mythology, offers hiking and eco-tourism.
Modern City: Canakkale itself is a lively university town with a bustling waterfront promenade, seafood restaurants, and the Naval Museum. The city’s clock tower and narrow streets reflect its Ottoman heritage.
Travellers using Canakkale Airport are often headed to one of these destinations. The airport’s role in facilitating tourism and business in this culturally rich region cannot be understated.
