Overview

Rijeka International Airport (RJK) is a regional airport serving the Kvarner Gulf area of Croatia. While the city of Rijeka itself is an important port and industrial centre, the airport primarily caters to tourists heading to the popular coastal resorts of Opatija, the islands of Krk, Cres, Lošinj, and Rab, and the many beach towns along the mainland coast. The airport sees a seasonal influx of flights from across Europe, especially during the summer months, operating alongside smaller charter services and general aviation. It is a compact facility, offering a straightforward travel experience without the crowds and long waits of larger international hubs.

Location & Access

Rijeka Airport occupies an unusual geographic position: it is located on the island of Krk, near the town of Omisalj, about 27 km (17 miles) from the centre of Rijeka. The airport is connected to the mainland by the Krk Bridge, a landmark concrete arch bridge. This proximity means that the island start of your holiday begins at the airport arrivals hall.

• By Car: The airport is well-served by the Croatian motorway network. From the A1 motorway (Zagreb–Split), take the exit for the D102 road towards Krk Bridge. Parking at the airport is available at the terminal with both short-term and long-term spaces.
• By Bus: Direct bus services operate to Rijeka’s main bus station, timed to coincide with flight arrivals and departures. There are also seasonal shuttles to major resort towns like Opatija, Crikvenica, and resorts on Krk island itself. Check local timetables at the airport’s information desk.
• By Taxi: Taxis are available outside the terminal. Fares to central Rijeka are fixed and posted at the rank; it takes about 30 minutes. For island destinations, you may need to negotiate a price.
• By Transfer: Many hotels and tour operators arrange pre-booked transfers – look for kiosks in the arrivals hall.

Facilities

Though compact, Rijeka Airport provides a set of basic amenities to keep travellers comfortable:

• Accessibility: The airport is fully wheelchair accessible. There is a designated car park for passengers with reduced mobility, level entry into the terminal, and an accessible toilet with grab bars.
• Baggage Storage: A left-luggage service is available for storing bags for a few hours or longer. This is ideal if you have a layover or wish to explore before checking in.
• Toilets & Baby Changing: Clean restrooms are located in both the arrivals and departures areas. Each includes a baby changing table in the accessible toilet.
• Other Services: The terminal has a small café/bar and a newsagent selling snacks, drinks, newspapers, and souvenirs. Free Wi-Fi is offered throughout.

Note that due to the airport’s seasonal nature, some services (like the café) may have reduced hours outside the peak summer schedule.

About the Region

The Kvarner region is a diverse stretch of the northern Adriatic coast. Rijeka is Croatia’s longest-established ferry port, connecting the mainland to the islands of Krk, Cres, Lošinj, Rab, and Pag. The region is renowned for its cultural and natural attractions.

• Opatija: Just west of Rijeka, this elegant resort was once the summer playground of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. It has a long seaside promenade (Lungomare) lined with fine hotels and parks.
• Islands: Krk is the largest and most accessible island. It offers a mix of historic towns (Krk Town, Vrbnik) and beaches. Cres and Lošinj are quieter, focused on unspoiled nature and seafaring heritage. Rab has sandy beaches and a well-preserved medieval centre.
• Mainland: The coast from Crikvenica to Senj offers pebbly coves and lively resorts. Further inland, the Risnjak and Učka mountains provide hiking and scenic drives.

Many travellers use Rijeka Airport as a gateway to the Plitvice Lakes National Park (about a 2-hour drive) and the Istrian peninsula (easily reachable via the A7 motorway). The airport is also a good entry point for exploring the Kvarner’s offshore islands.

• Hours: The airport terminal is not open 24 hours a day. Opening times vary according to the flight schedule, which is heaviest during the summer season. Peak passenger volumes tend to occur around mid-morning to early afternoon (11:00–12:00). It is advisable to check the flight board or contact the airport directly before heading there outside of scheduled departures or arrivals.
• Currency: Croatia uses the euro (EUR). The airport has no bank or ATM, so bring enough cash for immediate needs. Most major cards are accepted in the café and for baggage storage.

Given its modest size, allow about one hour for check-in and security before domestic flights and two hours for international departures. The airport is efficient but can become congested when several flights depart simultaneously.
