Portoroz Airport (also known as Aerodrom Portorož) is a small international airport serving the coastal region of southwestern Slovenia. Located in the village of Secovlje, just a few kilometres from the popular resort town of Portoroz, the airport primarily handles seasonal charter flights and general aviation traffic. It is a convenient entry point for travellers heading to the Slovenian Riviera, the historic port city of Piran, and the nearby Croatian Istrian peninsula. Due to its limited capacity, Portoroz Airport operates on a seasonal basis, with most commercial flights scheduled during the summer months from May to October. The airport is particularly popular with tourists from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Scandinavia who come to enjoy the Adriatic coast and the region's Mediterranean climate.
Portoroz Airport is situated in the settlement of Secovlje, approximately 6 kilometres southeast of Portoroz and 8 kilometres from the town of Piran. The airport is close to the border with Croatia, making it a logical choice for visitors to both Slovenian and Croatian destinations along the Istrian coast. The nearest major city is Koper, about 12 kilometres to the north, while the Italian city of Trieste is roughly 40 kilometres away.
By car: The airport is easily reachable via the regional road that connects Portoroz to the Croatian border crossing at Dragonja. There is a car park on site, and rental car agencies operate from the terminal. Driving times: Portoroz centre – 10 minutes, Piran – 15 minutes, Koper – 20 minutes, Trieste – 40 minutes, Ljubljana – 1 hour 30 minutes.
By taxi: Taxis are available outside the terminal. Fixed rates to common destinations are usually posted, but it is advisable to agree on the fare beforehand.
By bus: Local bus services connect the airport with Portoroz, Piran, and Koper, though frequency can be limited. Timetables change seasonally, so checking the local transport provider (Arriva Slovenia) in advance is wise.
By bicycle: The airport is located on flat terrain near the coast, and cycling paths connect Secovlje with Portoroz and Piran. Bicycle racks are available outside the terminal.
Portoroz Airport is a compact facility that provides essential services for passengers. The terminal offers a small arrivals and departures area with the following confirmed amenities:
Note that there are no restaurants, duty-free shops, or lounges at Portoroz Airport. Passengers should plan to eat before arriving or bring their own snacks. The nearest cafes and shops are in Secovlje village or Portoroz town, a short drive away.
The airport serves the Slovenian Istria region, a narrow strip of coastline along the Adriatic Sea known for its charming medieval towns, salt pans, and vineyards. The area enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers, making it a year-round destination for outdoor activities.
Portoroz translates to "Port of Roses" and is the main tourist hub, featuring hotels, a casino, a marina, and long sandy beaches. The town is famous for its wellness tourism, with thalassotherapy centres using seawater and local mud.
Piran is a beautifully preserved Venetian-era town on a small peninsula, with narrow streets, a central square (Tartini Square), and a 15th-century church. It is a popular day trip and offers stunning views of the coast.
Secovlje Salina Nature Park lies just south of the airport and is one of the few active salt pans in the Mediterranean. Visitors can tour the salt fields, learn about traditional salt harvesting, and observe birdlife. The park is a protected wetland of international importance.
Wine and food: The region produces several local wines, including Malvazija and Refosk, and is known for fresh seafood, olive oil, and truffles. The nearby Istrian hinterland (both in Slovenia and Croatia) is a renowned gastronomic destination.
Koper is the largest town in Slovenian Istria, with a historic old town and a busy port. It is also a gateway to the scenic Brkini hills and the Karst region beyond.
Airport hours: Portoroz Airport is not open every day. It typically operates during daylight hours on days when flights are scheduled. During the off-season, the terminal may be closed or have very limited access. It is essential to check with your airline or the airport’s website for current operating times.
Peak hours: The busiest times at the airport are around 11:00 and 12:00, when most charter flights depart and arrive. Passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours before departure during these periods.
Contact:
The website provides up-to-date flight schedules, car rental information, and contact details for airport services. For specific accessibility requests, it is recommended to contact the airport directly in advance.
Note: As a small seasonal airport, facilities and services may be limited. Travellers should plan accordingly, especially in terms of food and transport connections.
