Getting There

Yining city centre is a 15- to 20-minute taxi ride from the airport, covering roughly 10 kilometres. Fares are modest — around 30 to 50 RMB depending on traffic and time of day. Ride-hailing apps like Didi also work in the area. Public buses run along the main route, but services are less frequent than in larger cities; check a local timetable or ask your hotel. If you are continuing overland to Kazakhstan, the Khorgos border crossing is about 90 kilometres west, and some travellers combine a flight into Yining with a road journey across the border. The airport has a small car park directly in front of the terminal, and the entire facility is accessible via level pathways. There is no railway link, but the road from the city is straightforward, lined with poplar trees and farmland.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Yining is compact, with a single departures lounge and a separate arrivals hall on the ground floor. Distances are short — from check-in to gate takes no more than a few minutes under normal conditions. Nomadic summer pastures, such as Nalati Grassland (about 200 kilometres southeast of Yining), attract domestic tourists with their rolling hills, yurts, and horse riding. Bayinbuluke Grassland, further south, is known for its vast wetland and swan reserve. The Ili River itself offers rafting and scenic cruises. Ethnic Kazakh food is a highlight: try horse meat sausage (kazy) or lamb pilaf, available at restaurants around Yining. The city also has a Russian influence visible in some older buildings and the presence of the Russian Orthodox Church on Xinhua Road, a reminder of 19th-century trade and migration. Air China, notably, cannot handle connecting flights through Yining — if you are transiting, book through another carrier or prepare to exit and re-enter security.
