Great experience with staff helping my elderly in-laws, both off the plane (helping with wheelchair in the rain) and also when returning home (13th Sep - 10 am flight to Melbourne -Jetstar). Ground staff helped us through the check-in promptly and also fast tracked us through security due to their age and health issues. Very impressive. **I have since located the names of the staff whom I would like to recommend-2 staff in particular - Kieren (on the Jetstar desk ) and also Dan (who ushered us through the security line) due my m-in-law being in a wheelchair . A very big thank to you both. My in-laws were super impressed and couldn't believe the personalised service, well actually care and respect compared to Melbourne airport staff. Above and beyond.
Ah, nothing like the warm welcome of being randomly selected for a carry-on bag check -- for absolutely no stated reason while racing to catch a flight. I understand they have to check bags. but not bags that are fine, but They really outdid themselves this time. Apparently, "we just need to check it" is now sufficient justification to take 20 full minutes rummaging through a perfectly normal bag with zero explanation or urgency. Meanwhile, I got to enjoy the luxury of panic as my boarding time ticked down. The best part? The staff -- instead of working efficiently -- found it appropriate to laugh during the delay and the man thinking it is a joke to get the rest of out the family when he said, "oh it's nothing". Well that's great isn't it. THEN WHY DID YOU PULL IT OUT!! Hilarious, really. I was just minutes away from missing my flight because someone couldn't be bothered to move at more than half-speed. I fully support airport security doing their jobs -- when it's actually about security. But this? This was disorganized, unprofessional, and completely unnecessary. If this is the level of competence I can expect here, I'll make every effort to avoid this airport in the future. Save yourself the frustration -- fly through literally anywhere else.
Airport foot traffic has increased without additional security terminals. It takes less time to get through a busy airport like Sydney during peak hour than it did here on a Saturday morning! Floors are dirty & not nice having people stretching out with feet on seats
I have used this airport twice recently flying from New Zealand. From the customs staff, MAF staff and the helpful Sunshine Ambassadors on arrival to the Jetstar counter staff and all staff in the departure process. What a friendly group of people. No sad sacks. Cheerful, welcoming people they give the place a very good vibe.
Sunshine Coast Airport (IATA: MCY) is the primary airport serving the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland, Australia. Located in the coastal suburb of Marcoola, it handles both domestic and international flights, connecting the region to major Australian cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, as well as select destinations in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. The airport is a vital transport hub for the growing population of the Sunshine Coast and a popular entry point for tourists drawn to the area’s famous beaches, national parks, and attractions like the Australia Zoo. Despite its relatively small size compared to Brisbane Airport, Sunshine Coast Airport has undergone expansions in recent years to accommodate increasing passenger numbers and larger aircraft, reflecting its importance as a regional gateway.
The airport is situated at 3 Friendship Drive, Marcoola, approximately 10 kilometres north of Maroochydore and 15 kilometres from Caloundra. It lies about 100 kilometres north of Brisbane, making it a convenient alternative for travellers heading to the northern Sunshine Coast or the Fraser Coast region. Access by car is straightforward via the Sunshine Motorway (State Route 70), which connects to major highways. The airport offers both free and paid parking options: the free parking lot is located a short distance from the terminal, while paid parking is available closer to the terminal for those willing to pay for convenience. For those without a car, taxi and rideshare services are readily available, and there are also local bus services operated by Translink that connect the airport to Maroochydore and other centres. However, public transport options are limited, so many visitors prefer to drive or hire a car from one of the on-site rental agencies.
Sunshine Coast Airport provides a range of amenities designed to make travel easier and more comfortable. Accessibility is well catered for, with an assistive hearing loop in the terminal, wheelchair-accessible car parking spaces, a wheelchair-accessible entrance, seating, and toilets. The airport also features a changing table in the accessible toilet, which is helpful for families with infants. Baggage storage is available for passengers who wish to explore the area before or after their flight without carrying luggage. Standard toilets are located throughout the terminal, and the airport’s on-site services include car rental desks, a café, and a small retail outlet. The airport provides free Wi-Fi for passengers. The peak hours are around midday (12 pm and 1 pm), when flights to and from major cities are concentrated, so travellers should allow extra time during these periods for check-in and security.
The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its pristine beaches, lush hinterland, and laid-back lifestyle. Stretching from Caloundra in the south to Noosa in the north, the region offers a diverse range of activities: surfing at Mooloolaba, hiking in the Glass House Mountains, and exploring the national parks of the Blackall Range. The area is also home to the famous Australia Zoo, founded by Steve Irwin, which attracts visitors from around the world. Further inland, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland features charming towns like Montville and Maleny, with their galleries, wineries, and panoramic views. The climate is subtropical, with warm summers and mild winters, making it a year-round destination. Fraser Island (K'gari), the world’s largest sand island, is accessible via ferry from nearby Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, and many travellers use Sunshine Coast Airport as a gateway for that adventure. The region’s economy is driven by tourism, retail, and healthcare, and the airport plays a key role in supporting its growth and connectivity.
Sunshine Coast Airport is open daily, but not 24 hours; operating hours vary depending on flight schedules. Passengers are advised to check the airport’s official website for current information on terminal access times and flight timetables. The airport can be contacted by phone on +61 1300 993 543. For the latest updates on parking, facilities, and flight status, visit www.sunshinecoastairport.com.au. As with all airports, arriving at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights is recommended, especially during the midday peak. The airport does not have a railway station, but car rental and shuttle services are available. For those driving, free parking is available but may be located further from the terminal, while paid parking offers closer convenience. Always confirm parking availability and rates before your trip.
