Kars Harakani Airport is the primary air gateway to the city of Kars, located in the remote eastern part of Turkey near the border with Armenia. The airport is named after the 11th-century Sufi scholar and poet Yusuf al-Harakani, reflecting the region’s deep Islamic heritage. It serves as a vital link for passengers traveling to this historically rich and geographically striking area, mostly for tourism, business, and visiting family. The airport handles domestic flights, with regular connections from major Turkish hubs such as Istanbul and Ankara. Airlines operating at the airport typically include Turkish Airlines and AnadoluJet, offering multiple daily frequencies during peak seasons. The terminal is compact but adequate, designed to handle the modest passenger traffic efficiently.
Kars Harakani Airport is situated approximately 6 kilometers (about 4 miles) southeast of the city center, making it conveniently close for travelers. The airport's address is Kars Merkez, TR, and it lies on the D 965 highway, which connects Kars to other eastern cities like Erzurum and Igdir. To reach the city center, passengers can take taxis, which are readily available outside the terminal, with a journey time of around 10–15 minutes. Havaş or municipal buses may also operate shuttle services to downtown Kars, though schedules can vary. For those driving, the airport has a parking area with dedicated spaces for wheelchair users. The surrounding landscape is characterized by high-altitude steppes and distant mountains, with the Kars Plateau providing a stark, beautiful backdrop.
Nearby cities and towns accessible from Kars include Sarıkamış (about 50 km northwest), known for its winter sports and forests, and the ancient capital of Ani (around 45 km east), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kars region is one of Turkey’s most culturally and historically fascinating areas. It sits on a high plateau at an elevation of about 1,750 meters (5,741 feet), resulting in a harsh continental climate with cold, snowy winters and brief, mild summers. The stark landscape is dotted with vast pastures, volcanic rocks, and the ruins of ancient civilizations.
Kars city itself boasts a rich heritage, influenced by Armenian, Georgian, Russian, and Turkish cultures. The most iconic landmark is the ruined medieval city of Ani, once the capital of the Bagratid Armenian kingdom, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore its well-preserved churches, mosques, and city walls, all set against a dramatic gorge. Nearer to the city center, the Kars Castle dominates the skyline, offering panoramic views. The city also features Russian-era architecture, including the historic Fethiye Mosque and the elegant stone buildings along the main boulevard.
Beyond history, the region is known for its unique local cuisine, especially the famous Kars cheese (Gruyère-style) and honey. The Kars countryside is ideal for nature lovers, with destinations like the Sarıkamış forests (a popular ski resort in winter) and the Çıldır Lake (a frozen lake where winter festivals include sledding and ice fishing). The area is also home to several wildlife species, including wolves, bears, and the rare Caucasian grouse. Many travelers come for the authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience, away from Turkey’s crowded coastal resorts.
