Stepanavan Airport (also known as Saratovka Airport) is a small regional airport located in the Lori Province of northern Armenia. It primarily serves the town of Stepanavan, about 10 kilometres to the southeast, and the surrounding rural communities. The airport caters to general aviation, charter flights, and occasional domestic or regional commercial services. It is not a major hub, but it plays a role in connecting this mountainous area to the rest of the country and, in summer, to international destinations via seasonal charters. The airport’s quiet setting and convenient location make it a useful alternative for travellers heading to Lori’s forests, mountain resorts, and historic monasteries, especially when Yerevan’s Zvartnots Airport is too far or congested.
Stepanavan Airport lies near the village of Saratovka, roughly 10 kilometres north-west of Stepanavan town centre. The airport is situated in a broad valley of the Dzoraget River, surrounded by low, forested hills. The nearest major city is Vanadzor, about 30 kilometres to the south-east, while the capital Yerevan is approximately 140 kilometres to the south-west via the M6 highway.
Getting to the airport by car is the most straightforward option. From Stepanavan, take the road towards Saratovka; the journey takes about 15 minutes. For those coming from Yerevan, follow the M4 and then M6 highways; the drive typically takes 2.5–3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. There are also shared taxis (marshrutkas) running from Yerevan to Stepanavan, but they do not stop directly at the airport — you would need to arrange a taxi from Stepanavan town (a 10–15 minute ride). The airport has a modest parking area, though no dedicated long-term parking facilities. Renting a car in Yerevan and driving yourself gives the most flexibility.
As a very small regional airport, Stepanavan has extremely limited facilities – in fact, none beyond the most basic. There is a single small terminal building, which handles check-in and arrivals. There is no restaurant, café, or shop inside. Washrooms are available but may be minimal. There are no ATMs or currency exchange. Wi-Fi is not guaranteed. Travellers should come prepared: bring your own snacks and water, have some Armenian dram cash on hand, and use restroom facilities before arrival. The airport is primarily used by passengers arriving and departing via chartered flights, so the terminal experiences activity only around flight times. The peak hours are reportedly around 8 pm and 9 pm, likely corresponding to scheduled or seasonal arrivals. The airport is not open daily; operations occur only on days with scheduled flights, so check in advance.
Lori Province, where Stepanawan Airport is located, is one of Armenia’s most scenic regions. Known as the “green lung” of the country, it is covered by dense forests, deep river gorges, and rolling hills. The resort town of Dilijan, often called “Little Switzerland”, is about 50 kilometres east, famous for its national park and hiking trails. The area also boasts important cultural landmarks: the UNESCO-listed monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin (both 11th-century) are within a 30–40 minute drive from the airport, perched on cliff edges in the Debed Canyon. Another must-see is the medieval fortress of Lori Berd, near the town of Stepanavan itself. The Dzoraget River offers rafting in spring. Summer and winter bring tourists to the mountains for trekking, camping, and skiing (though the nearest ski resort, Lernvan, is small). The region is also known for its mild climate and local produce: honey, dairy, and herbal teas.
Travellers typically visit Lori for nature, history, and quiet retreats. Stepanavan Airport provides a convenient gateway for those staying in the northern part of the region, bypassing the long drive from Yerevan. For international travellers, flights may be available during summer months to Russia (e.g., Moscow or Sochi) or other CIS destinations. However, since services are irregular, always confirm with local flight operators.
Given the lack of facilities and limited schedule, careful planning is essential. Arrive well before your flight, bring your own amenities, and check flight status with your carrier. Despite its modest size, Stepanavan Airport offers a uniquely convenient entry point to one of Armenia’s most beautiful regions.
