The airport is situated in a broad valley of the Dzoraget River, surrounded by low, forested hills. The nearest major city is Vanadzor, about 30 kilometres to the south-east, while the capital Yerevan is approximately 140 kilometres to the south-west via the M6 highway.

Getting to the airport by car is the most straightforward option. From Stepanavan, take the road towards Saratovka; the journey takes about 15 minutes. For those coming from Yerevan, follow the M4 and then M6 highways; the drive typically takes 2.5–3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. There are also shared taxis (marshrutkas) running from Yerevan to Stepanavan, but they do not stop directly at the airport — you would need to arrange a taxi from Stepanavan town (a 10–15 minute ride). The airport has a modest parking area, though no dedicated long-term parking facilities. Renting a car in Yerevan and driving yourself gives the most flexibility.

Stepanavan Airport provides a convenient gateway for those staying in the northern part of the region, bypassing the long drive from Yerevan.
