Loved this airport! My first visit to Russia and I felt shocked! What a great looking, clean and organized airport, with amazing passport control officers, and a great lounge. The huge windows offer dramatic views of the surrounding mountains and everything is marked in Russian and English. Definitely a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Thank you for an amazing experience to all in Sochi.
Keep in mind that the airport is small / crowded and the flights are always delayed Arrival, It's one of the worst entries to Russia for foreigners , try to avoid this Airport (they will hold all your documents for minimum two hours then they will grant you entry) keep in mind. They do not speak any language except Russian and you'll be looking for your luggage after this two hours hold in customs. Departure, Even though I have checked in online and got Electrical boarding pass, they stopped me and asked me to go back check in office then they hold my documents for one hour. In conclusion, I hope they improve this Airport.
There's a nice patio in the airport building. If you're departing you can get out for a bit of fresh air thru the stairs to boarding gates 13-16. It's really nice. Used to be accessible from the main lobby, now it's for boarding passengers only, after you've passed the pre-flight security check.
All good and well organized.
Sochi International Airport (AER) is the primary aviation gateway to Russia’s premier Black Sea resort destination. It serves the city of Sochi and the wider Krasnodar Krai region, handling both domestic and international flights. The airport sees a significant influx of tourists heading to Sochi’s beaches, mountain ski resorts, and cultural sites, as well as business travellers attending events at the nearby Olympic Park. During peak holiday seasons and major events, passenger traffic increases substantially, with the busiest hours around 1 pm and 2 pm. Sochi Airport is not open 24 hours a day; its operating hours are tied to the flight schedule, so travellers should plan arrivals and departures accordingly.
The airport is situated in the Adler district, approximately 30 kilometres southeast of Sochi city centre. It lies close to the border with Abkhazia and is sandwiched between the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea coast. The location offers convenient access to both the coastal resorts and the inland mountain areas.
Sochi International Airport provides a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable journey. The following facilities are confirmed:
While the confirmed amenity list is concise, travellers should expect a typical modern airport environment with flight information displays, charging points, and waiting areas.
Sochi is uniquely situated at the crossroads of subtropical coast and alpine peaks. The city stretches along the Black Sea shore for nearly 150 kilometres, backed by the towering Caucasus Mountains. This geography gives Sochi a mild climate year-round, making it a popular destination for beach holidays in summer and ski trips in winter.
The region gained international prominence as the host of the 2014 Winter Olympics, which left a legacy of world-class sports venues, including the Fisht Olympic Stadium, the Adler Arena Skating Centre, and the Rosa Khutor ski resort. These facilities continue to attract athletes and spectators for competitions and events.
Beyond sports, Sochi is known for its botanical gardens, sanatoriums, and the Riviera Park. The nearby Sochi National Park and the Caucasus Biosphere Reserve offer hiking, wildlife viewing, and stunning landscapes. The city also has a rich cultural scene, with theatres, museums, and the famous Sochi Arboretum.
For travellers, Sochi serves as a base to explore both the coast and the mountains. Day trips to Krasnaya Polyana (a ski and mountain-biking hub) or the historic city of Gagra in Abkhazia are common.
Whether visiting for leisure, business, or transit, Sochi International Airport provides the essential services to start a journey along the Russian Riviera.
