Big airport w very limited toilets
The airport is small, the building prefabricated. But it does its job perfectly. The runway is brand new. The airport staff is fantastic. Everyone is very polite and friendly, just like throughout Abkhazia. It's great that you can now fly directly, bypassing Adler.

Sukhum Babushara Airport (also known as Sukhum Airport) is a small regional airport serving the capital city of Sukhum in Abkhazia, a disputed territory on the eastern coast of the Black Sea. The airport primarily handles charter flights and occasional scheduled services, connecting this resort region with a handful of destinations in Russia and the Middle East. Most traffic consists of tourists visiting Abkhazia's beach resorts, as well as business travellers and those visiting family. The airport is modest in size, with a single terminal building and basic infrastructure, reflecting the limited scale of commercial aviation in the area.
Babushara Airport is situated about 20 kilometres southeast of central Sukhum, near the village of Babushara. It lies along the Black Sea coast, surrounded by subtropical vegetation and hilly terrain. The main road to the airport is the Sukhum–Ochamchire highway, which connects to the city centre and other coastal towns.
Getting there:
Nearby cities and towns include Sukhum (capital), Gudauta (about 30 km northwest), and Gagra (about 50 km northwest). The airport is the primary gateway for visitors heading to these coastal resorts.
The airport offers only the most essential amenities for passengers:
There are no shops, restaurants, cafés, or duty-free outlets on site. Passengers should bring their own food and drinks, especially if expecting delays. The terminal building is small, with limited seating and no air conditioning in some areas. Wi-Fi is not available. For those requiring special assistance, it is best to arrange with the airline or a local travel agency in advance.
Abkhazia is a narrow strip of land between the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea. Its climate is subtropical, with mild winters and warm, humid summers. The region is renowned for its natural beauty: lush forests, citrus groves, tea plantations, and pebble beaches. During the Soviet era, Abkhazia was a premier holiday destination, with sanatoriums and resorts lining the coast. Today, tourism remains a key draw, despite the political tensions. Visitors come for beach holidays, hiking in the mountains, and to explore historic sites such as the Abkhazian State Museum, the Sukhum Botanical Garden, and the ruins of the ancient Greek colony of Dioscurias (modern-day Sukhum). The region is also known for its wine and local cuisine.
Peak travel season is from June to September, when the weather is warmest and the Black Sea is swimmable. The airport sees its busiest hours around 6–7 pm, when charter flights from Russian cities typically arrive.
Given the airport's limited facilities and irregular schedule, passengers should plan ahead. Arrive early, bring snacks, and arrange transport in advance if possible. While the airport is functional for a small region, it lacks the amenities of a major hub, so patience is essential.
