Tokua Airport sits on the Gazelle Peninsula of East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, serving as the primary air link for the provincial capital Kokopo and the surrounding region. Located approximately 19 kilometres southeast of Kokopo town centre, the airport replaced the old Rabaul Airport after the 1994 volcanic eruption that buried parts of Rabaul. Today, it handles flights to and from Port Moresby, Lae, and other domestic destinations, mostly operated by Air Niugini and PNG Air. The terminal is compact—arrivals and departures share a single building—and the entire operation has a distinctly regional character: passenger loads are small, check-in lines are short, and the pace is unhurried. Getting There

Tokua Airport is connected to Kokopo by one main road, the Kokopo–Rabaul Highway. The distance is about 19 kilometres, and the journey typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions. The road is sealed but can be rough in places, especially after heavy rain. Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs)—shared minibuses or vans—run between Kokopo market and the airport, though service is irregular and not timetabled. A PMV ride costs around 5–10 kina per person. For more certainty, hire a taxi from Kokopo; the fare is roughly 40–60 kina one way. Pre-arranging a pickup with a hotel or guesthouse is common and recommended. There is no shuttle bus from the airport to town. If you are driving yourself, parking at the airport is free and the car park is wheelchair accessible. The road to the airport passes through oil palm plantations and small villages; it is a straightforward route but poorly lit at night, so plan to arrive during daylight hours.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Tokua Airport is a single-storey building that handles both departures and arrivals. On entering, the check-in counters are to the left, with a small waiting area and a security checkpoint leading to the departure lounge. Departures and arrivals share the same baggage claim area, which can feel cramped when a flight arrives. The airport is wheelchair accessible, with ramps and a designated car park space. Confirmed facilities include a baggage storage service (useful if you have a layover), toilets, and basic on-site services such as a small snack counter that sells drinks and packaged snacks. There are no ATMs inside the terminal; the nearest bank is in Kokopo. The atmosphere is laid-back—staff are polite, and security screening is quick. The departure lounge has hard plastic seating and a view of the apron. Flight information is announced over a PA system, but there is no digital display board. Boarding is by foot to the aircraft, so be prepared for a short walk across the tarmac. The Duk Duk secret society is another cultural highlight, though ceremonies are not staged for tourists. For WWII history buffs, the area offers Japanese bunkers, tunnels, and the remains of the Simpson Harbour naval base. Tokua Airport is not open every day of the week. Flight schedules are concentrated on weekdays, with services on Sunday extremely limited or nonexistent. The busiest times are Monday through Thursday around 11 am, when multiple flights arrive and depart. Check with your airline for exact schedules as they change frequently.
