The airport comprised of two small buildings, the first of which is segmented into two different areas. One for incoming passengers and the other for outgoing passengers. The other building is a small toilet block. The runway is unsealed and is comprised of a granular material that looks in appearance to be a limestone like material. There are a number of small earthworks machinery on standby to maintain the runway and its always been in good condition whenever I've used it. The 5 stars on the way out and 1 start on the way in ;)
Fast and efficient in checking in and on time flights
Island community supported by the Lihir Gold mine. Community is safer and friendlier. Township has most basic services like banking and a hospital and school. Mine residential community has its own international school. Climate is humid with moderate rainfall all year round. Law and order issues are beginning to emerge. Especially armed hold ups of stores. Few isolated break and enter at Lihir residential staff houses in the past year.
It's a small airport which is used by the mine and locals to access the island. Though the runway needs upgrading, it is safe to access and has all the amenities a small airport can have
Lihir Island Airstrip, also known as Londolovit Airport, is a small airstrip serving Lihir Island in Papua New Guinea. It is the primary gateway for the island, which is home to the Lihir Gold Mine, one of the largest gold mines in the world. The airstrip is mainly used by charter flights operated by airlines such as Air Niugini and PNG Air, connecting the island to mainland PNG destinations like Port Moresby and Rabaul. Travelers are typically mine workers, corporate personnel, and some tourists visiting the island's unique volcanic landscapes or diving spots. Due to its remote location, the airstrip plays a vital role in transporting essential supplies and personnel to the mine and local communities.
The airstrip is located near the town of Londolovit on the southwestern coast of Lihir Island. The island is part of the New Ireland Province, situated in the Bismarck Archipelago northeast of the mainland. Access to the airstrip is via a single sealed runway that runs roughly east–west. From the terminal, passengers can take taxis or hotel shuttles to Londolovit town (about 5–10 minutes) or to the mine site (about 15 minutes). There is no scheduled public transport, but private vehicles can be arranged through accommodations or the mine's transport office. The nearest alternative airport is at Tokua (Rabaul) on New Britain, connected by regular flights, though Lihir's airstrip is the only practical way to reach the island directly by air.
Lihir Island Airstrip is a basic facility with limited amenities. Confirmed facilities include a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a toilet. The terminal building is small, with a check-in area and seating for waiting passengers. There are no shops, restaurants, or cafes on site, so travelers should bring their own food and water if needed. The airstrip does offer free Wi-Fi in the terminal, though connectivity may be intermittent. Car parking is available just outside the terminal, and there is a small area for drop-offs. Since the airstrip is not open every day (only on days with scheduled flights), passengers should confirm flight schedules in advance. Peak hours are around 5 pm and 6 pm local time, when flights typically depart for Port Moresby.
Lihir Island is a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean, part of the Tabar Group. It is best known for the Lihir Gold Mine, which operates one of the world's largest gold deposits. The mine dominates the local economy, employing thousands of people and driving the need for frequent air transport. The island itself features lush rainforest, volcanic peaks, and black sand beaches. Diving enthusiasts visit for pristine coral reefs and marine life, including sea turtles and manta rays. However, tourism is limited due to the island's remote location and focus on mining. Nearby attractions include the caldera of Mount Luise and hot springs along the coast. The local population speaks various languages, with Tok Pisin and English being common.
