Suketar airport It is on the way to the famous Pathibhara temple. Distance is 5 km from Taplejung city and an elevation of 2419 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by Suketar settlement where mostly Sherpa communities' peoples are live. Small vehicles are available from Taplejung to reach here and go down to town. At present, planes come and go from Biratnagar to this airport. This service is not regular. Now runs twice a week. This is the only air route from Biratnagar to Taplejung. Taplejung is a northeastern district of Nepal. It is connected to Tibet of China in the north and Bengal state of India in the south. Kanjanjungha, Kumbhakarna Himal is clearly visible from this airport. This place is surrounded by big mountains.
The one and only airport of Taplejung. On Saturday and tuesday two flight at around 9 am take off( as this date but always confirm before). No guarantee of flight as i heard. I didnt fly from here yet so no information regarding plane and facilities. But airport surrounding is good. The premise and runway is expanding. You can also get the service of courrier.

Suketar Airport sits on a hillside above the Tamor River valley in eastern Nepal, serving the district headquarters of Taplejung at an elevation of around 2,500 feet. The airstrip is short – just 1,100 metres – and requires pilots trained for mountainous approaches. Buddha Air and Tara Air operate daily flights to Kathmandu, making this the most reliable link between the remote Kanchenjunga region and the capital. For the roughly 50,000 residents of Taplejung district, and the trekkers headed to Kanchenjunga Base Camp, the airport is not a luxury but a necessity.
Suketar Airport is about one kilometre from Phungling bazaar, the main town centre. The walk takes fifteen minutes downhill; uphill is longer and steeper. Taxis and jeeps are available for the short trip, typically costing around 200–300 NPR. For those arriving by road from Kathmandu, the alternative is an overnight bus journey of ten to twelve hours via Birtamod and the Mechi Highway. Most travellers, however, fly. The Kathmandu–Suketar flight takes about forty minutes and offers striking views of the Himalaya on a clear day. From the airport, local buses and shared jeeps connect to other parts of Taplejung district, including the trailheads for Kanchenjunga treks at Khesewa and Mitlung. The road beyond Phungling is mostly unpaved and winding, so allow extra time for onward journeys.
The terminal building at Suketar is compact and functional. On arrival, passengers walk across the tarmac to a single hall that serves both check-in and baggage claim. The facility is wheelchair-accessible, with a ramp at the entrance and an accessible toilet. Baggage storage is available for a small fee – useful for trekkers who want to leave gear while exploring the town. There is no restaurant or café; a small shop sells bottled water and packaged snacks. The seating area has plastic chairs and basic shelter. Flights are announced by staff rather than over a PA system. Expect to queue for security screening, which is thorough but quick due to low passenger numbers. Toilets are clean but basic. Overall, the terminal covers the essentials without any frills – arrive with everything you need for the day.
Phungling, also called Taplejung Bazaar, is the main settlement in the district and the last sizeable town before the high Himalaya. It sits at the confluence of the Tamor and Kabeli rivers, surrounded by terraced fields and forested hills. The town itself is a collection of tightly packed buildings along a main road, with a busy weekly market that draws farmers from surrounding villages. For trekkers, Phungling is the gateway to the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, which shelters the world’s third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga (8,586 metres). The trek to the base camp takes around two weeks and passes through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and glacial valleys. The region is also home to the sacred Pathibhara Devi Temple, a hilltop shrine visited by pilgrims from across Nepal. Culturally, Taplejung is predominantly Limbu, with strong influences from Rai and Sherpa communities. The annual Chasok Tangnam festival in December celebrates the Limbu new year with traditional dance and feasts. The airport, though small, has transformed access to this once-isolated area – before it opened, the nearest airstrip was in Bhadrapur, a full day’s drive away. Today, it supports a modest tourism industry, with guesthouses and teahouses that cater to trekkers and pilgrims.
Suketar Airport is open daylight hours only, typically from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but flights are most frequent in the morning when weather is clearest. The busiest times are Monday at 7:00 PM, Tuesday at 5:00 PM, Wednesday at 8:00 PM, and Thursday at 7:00 PM – however, these may reflect arrival peaks rather than departure times; confirm with your airline. The airport is closed on some days due to weather or lack of flights – always check the latest schedule on the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal website (http://www.caanepal.gov.np/) or call your airline. There is no ATM in the terminal; the nearest bank in Phungling is a ten-minute walk. Mobile network coverage is patchy, so download offline maps and copies of permits beforehand. One practical tip: carry extra cash for the taxi and snacks, as card payments are not accepted anywhere in the airport or town. And if you are trekking, store non-essential luggage at the baggage counter – it is safe and cheap.
Final piece of advice: on the day of departure, arrive at Suketar Airport at least an hour early because flights can depart without warning if weather improves unexpectedly – missing one could mean waiting days for the next seat.
