Barely an airport, basically a landing/take off Strip. The 'arrival hall' is a shed where you give in your luggage tag and take your bags. Flights rarely leave/arrive on time. Toilets are not fancy, but are thankfully, clean. You CANNOT carry 500 notes so ensure you change your Indian currency to Nepali or carry smaller denominations. There is a canteen outside the airport which again, isn't fancy but serves great tasting local food.
Compared to how the airport was when I visited 8 years ago, they have renovated. I was grateful that the bathrooms were clean (at least the women's). There was a playground outside for kids. Bhadrapur gets really hot in the summer so be prepared for some heat.
Bhadrapur Airport functions as a key domestic hub in eastern Nepal, providing efficient air travel connectivity between Kathmandu and Jhapa, Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung, and West Bengal, India. Although infrastructure upgrades are needed, the airport maintains its status as a critical domestic asset for Nepal. Ground transportation is readily accessible via readily available on-site taxis. Passenger amenities, including waiting areas and restrooms, meet acceptable standards. Comprehensive security protocols are implemented to guarantee the safety of both the airport and its aircraft.
The service and everything is good but the airport needs to be upgraded, Nepal Civil Aviation authority needs to upgrade with new technology. However the services & everyone are friendly & quite satisfactory airport
Chandragadhi Airport (also known as Bhadrapur Airport) is a domestic airport serving the southeastern region of Nepal. Located in the town of Bhadrapur in Jhapa District, it is a key gateway for travelers heading to the eastern Terai and the nearby Indian border. The airport is primarily used for flights to and from Kathmandu, operated by Nepal’s domestic airlines. It plays a vital role in connecting this agricultural and commercial hub with the capital, especially for business travelers, locals visiting family, and tourists exploring eastern Nepal.
Chandragadhi Airport sits on the outskirts of Bhadrapur, a town in the fertile plains of the Terai region. The airport is less than 10 kilometers from the Indian border at Kakarbhitta, making it convenient for cross-border travelers. The nearest major city is Biratnagar, about 90 kilometers to the west, but Bhadrapur itself is a central point for several surrounding towns, including Damak, Chandragadhi, and Jhapa.
By Road: Most passengers reach the airport by private vehicle, taxi, or local bus. The airport is located on the Mahendra Highway (East-West Highway), the main road artery across southern Nepal. From Kakarbhitta, it is a short 20-minute drive. Taxis are readily available in Bhadrapur and from the border crossing. Parking is available at the airport, including designated wheelchair-accessible spaces.
From Kathmandu: The only practical way to reach Bhadrapur from Kathmandu is by air (unless you have days for a long overland journey). Flights land at Chandragadhi, after which visitors can continue to their final destination by road.
Public Transport: Local buses and microvans run along the highway and can drop passengers near the airport entrance, but schedules are irregular. For most travelers, a taxi or pre-arranged pickup is the most reliable option.
The airport provides essential amenities for passenger convenience. While it is a small facility without extensive retail or dining options, the following services are confirmed:
Note that there are no reported food concessions, shops, or lounges at the airport. Travelers are advised to bring snacks and water, as options are limited to what may be available from small vendors outside the terminal. The airport operates for scheduled flights only; outside these times, the building may be closed.
Chandragadhi Airport serves the eastern Terai, a region known for its lush tea gardens, dense forests, and agricultural bounty. Jhapa District is the largest tea-producing area in Nepal, and the surrounding landscape is dotted with sprawling tea estates. The town of Bhadrapur itself is a commercial center, with markets selling local produce, textiles, and goods from across the nearby Indian border.
Tourists often pass through Bhadrapur en route to other destinations. The area is a gateway to the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area in the far northeast, one of Nepal’s premier trekking regions, though the journey from the airport to the trailheads takes several hours by road. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts visit nearby wetlands like the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, about a two-hour drive west. The airport also serves as a convenient entry point for travelers crossing from India at Kakarbhitta, connecting to places like Siliguri and Darjeeling.
Culturally, the region is a blend of Nepali and Indian influences, with a majority Hindu population and numerous temples. The local economy is driven by agriculture – rice, jute, and tea – as well as cross-border trade. For Nepalis living abroad, particularly those working in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, Bhadrapur is a common stop when returning to their home villages.
Peak Hours: The airport sees its busiest times around 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM, corresponding to flight arrivals and departures. Check with your airline for exact times, as schedules vary.
Days of Operation: The airport is not open every day. Flight frequency depends on demand and airline schedules, so confirm availability when planning travel.
