Overview

Tenzing-Hillary Airport (also known as Lukla Airport) is a domestic airport located in Chaurikharka, Nepal, serving as the primary gateway for trekkers and mountaineers heading to the Mount Everest region. It is named after the first two individuals to summit Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, reflecting its role in Himalayan adventure. The airport is known for its short runway set on a hillside between mountains, making it one of the most challenging airports in the world for pilots. Location & Access

The airport sits at an elevation of 2,845 metres (9,334 feet) in the Khumbu region, just a short distance from the town of Lukla. There are no roads connecting Lukla to the rest of Nepal; access is solely by air or on foot. The most common way to reach the airport is by a 45-minute flight from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. These flights are operated by several domestic airlines using small fixed-wing aircraft such as the DHC-6 Twin Otter. During the journey, passengers are treated to spectacular views of the Himalayan foothills and snow-capped peaks. Once at the airport, visitors walk into Lukla town and begin their trek to Everest Base Camp or other destinations. The airport's location is extremely remote, and its narrow, uphill sloping runway (only 527 metres long) is carved into a cliffside, with a mountain at one end and a deep valley at the other.
