The distance is roughly 350 kilometres, but the rough terrain makes it an arduous journey. A more manageable route is from Surkhet, about a 6-hour drive, but again conditions vary. Most travellers and locals fly to Dolpa from Nepalgunj (KEP), where there are daily flights — at least on days when Dolpa is open. The flight takes about 30–40 minutes, offering stunning views of the Himalayan foothills. For trekkers, it is also possible to reach Jufal by foot from places like Dunai (a 2–3 day walk) or via the Dolpo Circuit, but that is not a practical way to arrive at the airport itself. The airport is located just outside Jufal town, about a 15-minute walk from the main bazaar. There are no buses or taxis; you will either walk or arrange a pickup with your hotel or trekking company.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Dolpa Airport is a single-storey building with a concrete floor and corrugated metal roof. It is compact — essentially one room serves as both check-in area and waiting lounge. On arrival, passengers walk across the tarmac to the building. The check-in counter is straightforward: you present your ticket and ID, and your luggage is weighed and taken. Security is minimal; there is a basic walk-through metal detector and a manual bag check. The waiting area has plastic chairs for about 20–30 people, and a counter where flight information is posted on a whiteboard. The only confirmed facilities are a wheelchair-accessible entrance (a ramp at the door) and a toilet (basic squat-style, with a bucket flush). There is no restaurant, café, or shop inside the terminal. You will not find Wi-Fi or charging points. The shops in Jufal's bazaar sell basic supplies, trekking gear, and handicrafts like woollen blankets and thangka paintings. Third, the history. Dolpa was part of the ancient Himalayan salt trade route, and you can still see evidence of this in the trails and customs. The airport itself, opened in the 1970s, has enabled some development but the region remains extremely poor. Electricity is intermittent, and road access is poor. Tourism is growing slowly, but Jufal itself is not a major destination — most trekkers arrive, restock, and head out. Still, the town has a few simple guesthouses, a hospital, and a small airstrip that feels like a lifeline.
