Salle Airport (also known as Salle Airport, Musikot) is a domestic airport serving the Rukum District in the Karnali Province of western Nepal. It is a crucial transport link for residents and visitors to the remote mid-western hills, providing access to the district headquarters of Musikot. The airport primarily handles small fixed-wing aircraft operated by domestic airlines, connecting the region to other hubs like Nepalgunj, Surkhet, and occasionally Kathmandu. Due to the mountainous terrain and limited road infrastructure, air travel is often the most efficient way to reach Rukum, especially for government officials, aid workers, and trekkers.
The airport is relatively modest, with a single runway and a small terminal building. It plays a vital role in the local economy, facilitating the movement of goods and people. Given its remote location, flights can be susceptible to weather conditions, particularly during the monsoon season and winter fog.
Salle Airport is situated approximately 3 kilometres south of Musikot, the district headquarters of Rukum. Musikot itself is located in the southern part of the Rukum District, nestled in the valleys of the Mahabharat Range. The airport's elevation is around 900 metres above sea level.
Getting to the airport from Musikot is straightforward – taxis and local jeeps (share jeeps) are available from the town centre. The journey takes about 15–20 minutes. However, for those coming from outside the district, road access is challenging. The nearest major airport with more frequent connections is Nepalgunj Airport (NEP) in Banke District, roughly 220 kilometres southeast. From Nepalgunj, travellers can drive via the Ratna Highway, a journey of 7–9 hours depending on road conditions. Alternatively, Surkhet Airport (SKH) is about 90 kilometres east as the crow flies, but driving takes over 4 hours due to winding roads.
For flights directly to Salle, check with domestic carriers like Tara Air or Summit Air. There is no public bus service directly to the airport, so the most common option is to hire a taxi from Musikot.
While Salle Airport is small, it provides essential amenities to ensure a comfortable experience for passengers with mobility needs and families. The following facilities are confirmed:
Wheelchair Accessibility: The car park and entrance are wheelchair-accessible. There is also a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Toilets and Changing Facilities: Standard toilets are available, and a dedicated changing table for infants is provided. Baggage Storage: The airport offers baggage storage services, useful for travellers who may need to leave luggage while exploring the region.
It is important to note that the airport does not have a restaurant, café, or duty-free shop. Passengers are advised to bring their own snacks and water, especially for longer waits. There is no Wi-Fi or lounge. Given the limited facilities, plan accordingly.
Rukum District is part of the Karnali Province, one of Nepal's most remote and least developed regions. The area is renowned for its rugged natural beauty – steep hills, terraced farmlands, and deep river valleys such as those of the Bheri and Sani Bheri rivers. The region's geography is dominated by the Dhaulagiri massif to the north, though most of the district lies in the middle hills.
Travellers come to Rukum for several reasons. The district is a gateway for treks into the rarely visited areas of the Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba ranges. The remote trails offer an off-the-beaten-path experience away from the crowds of the Everest and Annapurna regions. Also notable are the Kakrebihar (a historic Buddhist monastery near Musikot) and the Rukumkot area, which is known for its traditional Thakuri and Magar cultures. The region is also significant for its role in Nepal's political history, particularly during the 1990s and 2000s as a stronghold for the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).
Agriculture is the mainstay of the local economy, with maize, millet, rice, and wheat grown on terraced slopes. Livestock farming is also common. Due to its remoteness, the airport remains a lifeline for essential supplies and medical emergencies.
Salle Airport serves as a humble yet indispensable point of entry for adventurous travellers and locals alike. With modest facilities but a reliable connection to the outside world, it is the starting point for exploring the wild beauty of Rukum.
