Busiest on Mondays around 4 pm — usually busy.
The airport waiting room is not cold, there are 3 only Air conditioning, there is no loudspeaker facility for the receptionist guarding in front of the boarding, so the announcement of the plane's departure can not be heard, the tv screen for a lot of dead information makes it difficult for passengers to know flight information
Thank you, Sis, for giving a rating.
Nice, clean, and friendly airport. Unfortunately, it's still not fully recovered after long Covid Pandemic. Only wings Air served this airports 3-4 flights to Balikpapan and Samarinda. Many shops and cafe are closed, including all lounge. I hope all will return to its past glory.. Even better.
thank you for rate and review
The facilities at the airport are good, but when I was there the escalator going up to the gate was not turned on
thank you for rating and review, we are sorry for the inconvenience.
the airport is not so big but the facilities and service is excellent, it is an accessible airport because this is the gate to explore Berau, Derawan Island etc. one thing that disappoint me is theres no toilet in waiting room which we should exit the waiting room first and recheck and scan again the belongings, so tiring.
Kalimarau Airport (also known as Berau Airport) is a domestic airport serving Berau Regency in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It acts as the primary aviation gateway for travellers heading to the remote but increasingly popular Derawan Islands, a marine archipelago known for its pristine beaches, sea turtles, and world-class diving. The airport handles scheduled flights from major Indonesian cities, primarily Balikpapan and Samarinda, connecting the region to the rest of the country. Given Berau’s strategic location on the northeastern coast of Borneo, Kalimarau plays a vital role in supporting both tourism and local transportation for residents and businesses.
Kalimarau Airport is situated approximately 15 kilometres southwest of Tanjung Redeb, the capital of Berau Regency. The airport lies near the Berau River delta, surrounded by forested lowlands. Access to the airport is via a two-lane road that connects to the main highway through Berau. Most visitors arrive by taxi, ride-hailing services (such as Gojek or Grab), or private car. The drive from Tanjung Redeb takes about 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. For those heading directly to the Derawan Islands, airport taxis and shuttle services can arrange transfers to coastal villages like Tanjung Batu or Sangkulirang, where boats depart for the islands. The airport’s proximity to the coast means travellers can often reach their island destinations within a few hours of landing.
Kalimarau Airport is a modest facility but offers essential amenities for passenger comfort. The confirmed facilities include wheelchair‑accessible car parking, a wheelchair‑accessible entrance, and wheelchair‑accessible toilets, ensuring that passengers with reduced mobility can navigate the terminal with ease. There is also baggage storage available, which can be useful for travellers who want to explore briefly before checking into accommodation. Public toilets are present, including a changing table for infants, making it family‑friendly. The terminal building is compact, with a small waiting area and a few kiosks selling snacks and drinks. While the airport does not have extensive retail or dining options, the basic necessities are covered. Keep in mind that peak hours are from 7 pm to 8 pm, likely coinciding with arrivals from Balikpapan; the terminal can get busy during this window.
Berau Regency is located in the northern part of East Kalimantan Province, on the island of Borneo. The region is renowned for its natural beauty, most notably the Derawan Archipelago (Kepulauan Derawan), which consists of over 30 islands. Derawan Island itself is famous for its sea turtle conservation and clear waters, while Sangalaki and Kakaban islands offer incredible snorkelling and diving, including the world’s only non‑stinging jellyfish lake. On the mainland, Berau features limestone karst landscapes, rivers, and rainforest—part of the larger Heart of Borneo initiative. The Berau River is a key transportation artery, and the area is also known for coal mining and timber. Tourists typically come for marine tourism, eco‑adventures, and cultural encounters with Dayak communities. The airport’s traffic is closely tied to these attractions, especially during the dry season (April to October).
Travellers should note that the airport does not have ATMs, currency exchange, or extensive food courts; plan accordingly by bringing cash (Indonesian rupiah) and snacks if needed. For onward travel to the islands, pre‑arrange boat transfers or taxis in Tanjung Redeb. The airport’s website provides additional contact details and information on airlines serving the route.
