Mentawai Airport is the main gateway for tourist arrivals via air from Padang. This airport is a replacement for Rokot Airport which is located slightly to the east of this airport. This airport, although small, is still relatively new and quite comfortable. The building design is quite neat and the design is classified as a vernacular design.
Very good and the service is very humane... Very cool...

Mentawai Airport sits on the island of Sipora, about three kilometres north of the regency capital Tua Pejat. It opened in 2023 to replace the older Rokot Airport to the east, providing a more modern gateway for the Mentawai Islands Regency. The terminal is small—a single building with vernacular architectural touches that echo the region's tradisional rumah panggung (stilt houses)—and handles flights from Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport, the main link to Sumatra. Despite its size, the airport feels clean, comfortable, and orderly, with staff known for a humane, unhurried approach that stands out in Indonesia’s often chaotic domestic aviation network. The surrounding scenery—emerald ocean, steep coconut palms, and the low hills of Sipora—makes the approach memorable even before touchdown.
From Tua Pejat, the airport is a 10- to 15-minute drive east along the island’s main road. Taxis (fixed-price, around 50,000 IDR) and ojeks (motorcycle taxis, about 30,000 IDR) are available at the port or central market. Many hotels and surf resorts offer pre-arranged pickups; confirm in advance as mobile phone reception can be patchy on parts of Sipora. For those arriving from outside the regency, the only practical air route is a flight from Padang (PDG) operated by Wings Air or similar airlines—typically a 45-minute hop in an ATR 72. Ferry services from Padang to Tua Pejat also exist (12–14 hours), but the airport cuts that journey dramatically. The access road is paved but narrow; occasional potholes and livestock on the road are normal. Allow extra time if travelling during wet season (October to March) when conditions worsen.
The terminal has a single floor with a combined check-in and waiting area. Queues are short—the busiest times are Monday at 5 PM, Tuesday at 8 AM, Wednesday at 9 PM, and Thursday at 6 PM, corresponding to scheduled flights. The check-in counters are staffed by three or four people who move quickly. Security consists of a single X-ray machine and metal detector; wait time rarely exceeds five minutes. After security, there is a small departure lounge with plastic chairs, air conditioning (often set to a cool temperature that feels pleasant after the tropical heat), and a clean toilet (the only confirmed facility). A water dispenser is available, but paper cups are not provided—a notable weakness. Crew have been unresponsive to requests for cups, even for medical reasons, so bring your own cup or buy bottled water before entering. The building design is neat, with high ceilings and large windows that let in natural light. The overall atmosphere is calm, with no duty-free or retail outlets, and no food or beverage options inside the secure area. A small snack stall may operate outside the terminal before flight times. Wi-Fi is not available.
Mentawai Islands Regency comprises four main islands—Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, and South Pagai—and dozens of smaller islets, lying 150 kilometres off the west coast of Sumatra. The archipelago is world-famous among surfers for its consistent, powerful waves: breaks like Macaronis, Lance’s Left, and Beng Beng attract international surf charters year-round. But the regency is more than a surf destination. The Mentawai people, an indigenous group with a distinct Austronesian language and culture, have lived here for millennia, practicing a form of animism with ritual tattooing, sago farming, and communal longhouses called uma. Visitors can engage in cultural tourism—traditional dances, body-tattooing workshops, and treks through primary rainforest on Siberut, which is protected as a biosphere reserve. Biodiversity is high: the Mentawai islands host endemic species of primates (kloss’s gibbon, Mentawai macaque), birds, and plants. Historically, the islands were isolated due to difficult sea access; the new airport provides a reliable alternative to the overnight ferry, opening the regency to a broader range of travellers. Surf resorts, homestays, and eco-lodges are spread across the islands, connected by small speedboats or ferry. The regency’s population is around 90,000, mostly rural. The pace of life is slow, and infrastructure outside Tua Pejat is basic—dirt roads, intermittent electricity, and limited medical facilities. This is a place where travel requires patience, but rewards with authenticity and natural beauty.
Mentawai Airport is open only on days with scheduled flights. Based on busy times, flights operate on Monday (afternoon), Tuesday (morning), Wednesday (evening), and Thursday (afternoon). Check the airline’s schedule (Wings Air is the primary carrier) as changes happen. There is no official website or public phone number for the airport itself; contact the airline or a local travel agent in Tua Pejat for updates. The terminal has a toilet, a water dispenser (no cups), and limited seating. Bring a refillable water bottle, snacks, and cash (no ATM at the airport; the nearest is in Tua Pejat). Mobile signal is weak but usable near the terminal. For departures, arrive 45 minutes before the scheduled time—check-in closes 20 minutes prior. One concrete piece of advice: buy a packet of disposable cups at a shop in Tua Pejat before heading to the airport, so you can use the water dispenser without frustration.
