Garuda Indonesia, designated with IATA code GA and ICAO code GIA, stands as the national flag carrier of Indonesia and a prominent full-service airline in Southeast Asia. The airline was founded on 1 August 1947 as Garuda Indonesian Airways, initially established as a joint venture between the Indonesian government and the Dutch airline KLM. It began operations shortly after Indonesia’s independence, taking over domestic and international routes previously served by KLM’s Interinsulair Bedrijf. In 1954, the Indonesian government acquired full ownership, making Garuda a state-owned enterprise. Over the decades, the airline has undergone several restructuring phases, including a period of financial recovery in the early 2000s that repositioned it as a competitive carrier. Today, Garuda Indonesia remains majority-owned by the Indonesian government through PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, with a minority public listing on the Indonesia Stock Exchange.
The airline’s fleet is a modern mix of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, tailored to serve both short-haul and long-haul operations. As of recent years, the mainline fleet comprises Airbus A330-300, A330-900neo, and Boeing 777-300ER wide-body aircraft for international and high-density domestic routes, alongside Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 narrow-body jets for regional and domestic services. The carrier also operates smaller ATR 72 turboprop aircraft through its subsidiary, Citilink, though Garuda itself focuses on a full-service model. The airline’s primary hub and home base is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, which serves as the central point for its domestic and international network. A secondary hub is maintained at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, supporting the island’s significant tourism traffic. Additional focus cities include Juanda International Airport in Surabaya and Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, which help extend connectivity across the Indonesian archipelago.
Garuda Indonesia operates as a full-service network carrier, offering multiple cabin classes, inflight entertainment, and a loyalty programme called GarudaMiles. It differentiates itself from low-cost competitors by emphasising service quality and comfort, particularly on long-haul flights. The airline joined the SkyTeam alliance on 5 March 2014, becoming the first carrier from Indonesia to become a member of a global airline alliance. This membership provides connectivity with partners such as Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM, and Korean Air. The airline also maintains codeshare agreements with various non-alliance carriers. Over the years, Garuda Indonesia has achieved notable recognition, including being awarded a 5-star rating by Skytrax from 2014 to 2019, a distinction held by only a handful of airlines worldwide. It has also won multiple awards for best cabin crew and best regional airline. In 2020, the airline faced significant financial challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a court-supervised restructuring process, but it continues to operate as Indonesia’s flagship carrier, committed to connecting the vast archipelago with the rest of the world.
