Busiest on Mondays around 8 am — usually as busy as it gets.
Not a bad airport. Just wish the airport authority would prevent people from walking across the runway while airplanes are taking off and landing. People were standing near the runway when we landed.
The airport is small, but it's so comfortable and accessible to the central city of Merauke. Even the services is not really good, for the small city, it is more than enough.
Airport is small but very clean. Giving one star off, coz not much restaurant options inside the gate section. Even if there is, there's a minimum spending of 55k which is ridiculous
Nice airport with stunning view of the crystal clear sky. Unfortunately, there's no TP inside the gents lavatory
Mopah Airport serves as the primary air gateway to Merauke Regency, located in the southern part of Papua, Indonesia. It holds international status, though its traffic is predominantly domestic, connecting Merauke with major Indonesian hubs such as Jayapura and Makassar. The airport is a vital link for this remote region, handling travelers, government officials, and cargo. Given its location near the border with Papua New Guinea, Mopah also facilitates cross-border movement, albeit on a modest scale. For visitors, the airport is the starting point for exploring the unique landscapes and cultures of South Papua.
Mopah Airport is situated approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) east of downtown Merauke, the regency capital and largest town in the area. The journey from the city center takes about 10 minutes by car or taxi. Taxis are readily available for arriving passengers, and there may also be local minibuses or ojeks (motorcycle taxis) for shorter trips. For those driving themselves, the airport is accessible via Jalan Mopah, a well-maintained road. The airport is positioned near the coast, close to the Maro River delta. Other nearby settlements include Mandah and Rimba Jaya. Travelers heading to Wasur National Park, a major attraction, should expect a drive of about 30–45 minutes from the airport.
Mopah Airport offers a range of accessible amenities to ensure comfort for all travelers. The terminal has a wheelchair-accessible car park and a wheelchair-accessible entrance, making it easier for passengers with mobility needs. Inside, there are wheelchair-accessible toilets and a dedicated changing table for families with babies. Luggage storage is available, allowing passengers to store bags if they wish to explore the city without carrying heavy luggage. The airport also provides standard toilet facilities. For those arriving by car, a paid parking lot is located near the terminal, with affordable rates for short-term and long-term stays. Given the airport's remote location, these amenities meet essential passenger needs, though travelers should not expect extensive shopping or dining options beyond basic kiosks.
Merauke Regency lies in the southern lowlands of Papua, bordering Papua New Guinea to the east. The area is characterized by vast savannah grasslands, wetlands, and floodplains, a landscape quite distinct from the mountainous regions of central Papua. The Wasur National Park, a Ramsar Wetland of international importance, is a highlight of the region. It hosts an extraordinary diversity of bird species, including the majestic southern cassowary and various waterbirds, as well as marsupials like wallabies. The park is traversed by seasonal rivers and dotted with lagoons. Locally, the indigenous Marind and Anim people have inhabited this area for centuries, maintaining rich traditions in carving, weaving, and ceremony. The economy of Merauke revolves around agriculture (rice, sago, and corn), fishing, and forestry. The regency is often referred to as the “breadbasket of Papua” due to its agricultural potential. Travelers visit Merauke for ecotourism, cultural encounters, and the stark beauty of the southern Papua landscape—a stark contrast to the jungles typically associated with the island.
Mopah Airport does not operate all days of the week; flight schedules are intermittent, so it is essential to confirm availability with your airline when planning travel. Peak hours are concentrated around 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM, when most departures are scheduled. The airport has no confirmed official website or phone number, so information should be sought directly from airlines operating at the airport, such as Wings Air or Trigana Air. The paid parking lot is available for those driving, and the terminal is open only during flight times. Given the limited facilities, passengers are advised to bring their own food and drinks for longer waits. Accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility is well catered to, with accessible parking, entrance, and restrooms. For onward travel, taxis and private cars are the most reliable options to reach Merauke city or other destinations.
Overall, Mopah Airport serves as a functional entry point to the remote and remarkable region of South Papua. While not a large hub, it provides essential connectivity for travelers seeking to experience the unique ecology and culture of one of Indonesia’s least-visited corners.
