Busiest on Mondays around 11 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
Terrible airport. Make sure you eat and shop before you get here because there is a very poor selection of shops and restaurants. Airport Staff are all operating in slow motion. Slow check in, painfully slow Security which is hugely inefficient. Only one lane open and this one lane can accommodate 4people loading trays at once but they only allow 2 people at a time, slowing everything to a crawl. Guy at passport check also took a full two minutes of me standing there to open my passport and look at it. Why?
In the last 2 weeks I've flown from 3 other airports; Heathrow T5, Bristol and Canary Islands. Hannover is the worst! The airport is setup to generate CASH. None of the other 3 had 100ml limit, need to BUY (EU1.50) a ZIP LOCK BAG!!! Did not allow water in and had no water fountain (is that even legal?). The scanners etc were the same as the other airports. They just want you to buy their drinks and ziplock bags. Fortunately we flew BA so they let us check our bags with liquids in. AVOID THIS AIRPORT!
Hannover, Germany Airport Nice airport Normally seems not too crowded For KLM, Take Entry via Terminal A
I recently traveled through Hannover Airport (HAJ) in Germany, and it was a surprisingly smooth experience. From the moment I arrived, everything felt well-organized and easy to navigate. The clear signs and logical layout made it simple to find my way around, even though it was my first time there. The staff were great--really friendly and helpful. At check-in, security, and even the cafes, everyone I interacted with seemed genuinely happy to assist, which made a big difference in my overall experience. Speaking of cafes, the food options were pretty impressive. There are plenty of places to grab a bite or a drink, ranging from quick snacks to sit-down meals. The variety was nice, and everything I tried was tasty and fresh. One thing that stood out to me was the comfort level in the terminal. There were lots of comfortable seating areas, and I appreciated the many charging stations available. It made waiting for my flight a lot more pleasant. Plus, the airport lounges looked really inviting for anyone needing a quieter spot to work or relax. Getting to and from the airport was hassle-free, thanks to the efficient public transportation options and the close proximity to Hannover's city center. Whether you're catching a taxi, renting a car, or hopping on a train, it's all very convenient. Overall, Hannover Airport made my travel experience easy and enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend it if you're flying in or out of Germany. It's efficient, clean, and the staff go out of their way to make sure you have a good trip.
Hannover Airport (IATA: HAJ) serves as the main international gateway for the state of Lower Saxony and the city of Hannover, the state capital. Situated just north of the city in the town of Langenhagen, the airport handles a mix of scheduled European flights, leisure charters, and some intercontinental routes. It is particularly busy during major trade fairs such as Hannover Messe and the now-defunct CeBIT, though its steady traffic also comes from business travellers, tourists exploring the region, and connecting passengers. The airport has a single passenger terminal with two concourses, offering a manageable, efficient layout that avoids the sprawl of larger hubs. Security and check-in areas are well organised, and the overall atmosphere remains calm except during peak travel windows. Hannover Airport is classified as an international airport but primarily serves destinations within Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, with seasonal long-haul flights to holiday hotspots.
Hannover Airport lies about 11 kilometres north of Hannover city centre, in the municipality of Langenhagen. Its address is Petzelstraße 84, 30655 Hannover. The airport is well connected by road and rail. The A352 motorway runs directly past the terminal, linking to the A2 (east–west) and A7 (north–south) autobahns. Drivers can reach the city centre in roughly 20 minutes without traffic. The airport has its own railway station (Hannover Flughafen) located underneath the terminal building. The S-Bahn line S5 connects the airport to Hannover Hauptbahnhof (central station) in about 17 minutes, with trains running every 30 minutes. Regional buses also serve the airport from surrounding towns. Taxis and ride-hailing services are available outside arrivals. For those cycling, there are bike racks and a covered bicycle parking area near the terminal. The airport is also within reasonable driving distance of other cities: Bremen (about 1 hour 15 minutes), Hamburg (about 1.5 hours), and Berlin (about 2.5 hours).
Hannover Airport offers a solid range of passenger facilities, though it is not an oversized hub with endless shopping. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal – you can connect without a time limit, though speeds are adequate for browsing and messaging. For families, there are baby changing tables in several restrooms. The airport is fully wheelchair accessible: the car park, entrance, seating areas, and toilets all meet accessibility standards, and assistance can be arranged through your airline or the airport’s service desk. Baggage storage is available in the terminal – ideal for travellers with a layover or those wanting to explore Hannover without luggage. The facility is located near the arrivals hall and charges by the day or hour. Toilets are clean and plentiful, with accessible cubicles. Paid parking is available in short-term and long-term lots directly in front of the terminal; the car park is clearly signposted and offers barrier-free access. On-site services include currency exchange, a pharmacy, and a small supermarket in the public area. The airport also has a medical centre for emergencies. Note that there are no dedicated sleeping pods or lounges (except for airline-specific lounges), so for overnight stays, passengers should plan accordingly as the airport is not open 24 hours.
Hannover is the capital of Lower Saxony, a state in northern Germany known for its mix of urban culture, green spaces, and industrial heritage. The city itself is famous for hosting major trade fairs (Hannover Messe) and its historic Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen. The region is also home to the Steinhuder Meer, a large lake popular for sailing and hiking, and the Lüneburg Heath, a vast nature reserve that blooms purple in late summer. Lower Saxony has a strong automotive and manufacturing sector, with companies like Volkswagen headquartered in nearby Wolfsburg. Tourists often use Hannover Airport as a base to explore the fairy-tale town of Hamelin (the Pied Piper legend) or the medieval city of Brunswick. Culinary specialities include Grünkohl (kale) with sausage and Pinkel, and the region’s beer culture is prominent. The airport’s location makes it a convenient alternative to larger hubs like Frankfurt or Hamburg for those visiting northern and central Germany.
