My feeling about the airport is small , new and modern. The airport equips many modern facilities and machines. However, The interior space is so small although the airport looks so big from the outside. May be they build small ways for arrivals.
Security take the powerbank away coz new rules now. No information about before. And even you will come back after a couple of days they don't give it back to you. They said storage 1 day. What a joke...
International airport in Yichang nice and clean
This airport is new but it's not comfortable with many things because there are few shops to go shopping. Unfortunately it's closed too. Moreover there are flights delay frequently to make passengers bored so much. And I'm not appreciative about their toilets where there are no flush toilets like Beijing. OMG.
Yichang Sanxia Airport (also known as Yichang Three Gorges Airport) is the primary air gateway serving Yichang, a city in western Hubei Province, China. It plays a crucial role in connecting travellers to the famous Three Gorges region along the Yangtze River. The airport handles both domestic and limited international flights, with routes primarily linking Yichang to major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, as well as seasonal charter services to select Asian destinations.
Given its strategic location near the Three Gorges Dam—the world's largest power station—the airport sees a steady flow of tourists, engineers, and business travellers associated with tourism and hydroelectric industries. It also serves as a secondary access point for visiting Shennongjia, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its biodiversity and alleged sightings of the legendary Yeren (Chinese wild man).
Yichang Sanxia Airport is situated approximately 26 kilometres east of downtown Yichang, near the town of Xiaoting. The airport lies on the north bank of the Yangtze River, offering scenic views during approach. Transport options to and from the city centre include:
For those heading directly to the Three Gorges Dam or tourist towns like Yichang's Maoping (the dam's nearest town), taxis or private transfers are the most practical option, as public transport can involve multiple changes.
Yichang Sanxia Airport provides essential amenities to ensure passenger comfort. Based on confirmed data, the airport offers:
While the airport is not large by international standards, it offers the basics: a small food court with local snack options, a few retail shops selling travel essentials and souvenirs, and a VIP lounge for premium passengers. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, though connection speeds may vary.
Note that the airport does not operate 24/7; it closes overnight, typically from around midnight to early morning. Passengers with very early or late flights should plan accordingly.
Yichang is a prefecture-level city in western Hubei Province, historically known as a strategic point on the Yangtze River. The region is world-famous for the Three Gorges—Qutang, Wu, and Xiling—which stretch along the Yangtze upstream from Yichang. The Three Gorges Dam, located about 40 kilometres from the city, is a major engineering marvel and tourist attraction. Visitors flock to cruise the gorges, explore the dam's viewing platforms, and visit the Three Gorges Tribe scenic area, which showcases Tujia minority culture.
Beyond the gorges, Yichang is a base for exploring Shennongjia, a mountain range and forest preserve with rare wildlife like golden monkeys and clouded leopards. The region also features the Yichang Museum, the ancient Battle of Red Cliffs (Chibi) historical site, and the scenic Qingjiang River Gallery.
Yichang itself is a growing industrial and transport hub, with a pleasant riverfront promenade and local cuisine specialising in Yangtze River fish and Yichang-distilled baijiu liquor. The climate is subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters.
Travellers are advised to arrive at least 90 minutes before domestic flights and 2 hours before international departures. Currency exchange may not be available at the airport, so plan to carry Chinese yuan (RMB) or use ATMs in the city. Medical services are limited; a small first-aid station is located near the check-in area.
For up-to-date flight status, contact the airline directly or check real-time flight tracking apps. Given the airport's regional importance, it remains a reliable and functional gateway to one of China's most iconic natural wonders.
