Mackay Airport (IATA: MKY) is a regional airport serving the city of Mackay and the broader Mackay Region in Queensland, Australia. It is the primary aviation gateway for the area’s thriving sugar industry, mining operations, and tourism to the southern Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Islands. The airport handles domestic flights operated by airlines such as QantasLink, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar, connecting Mackay to major capitals including Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. It also supports fly-in fly-out (FIFO) traffic for the Bowen Basin coal mines, as well as general aviation for charter and private flights. Despite its regional size, Mackay Airport plays a critical role in the economic and transport life of the region.
Mackay Airport is located approximately three kilometres south of the Mackay central business district, within the suburb of South Mackay. Its address is 20 Boundary Road, South Mackay. The airport is easily accessible via the Bruce Highway (A1), which runs along the Queensland coast. From the city centre, the drive takes about five to ten minutes, making it one of Australia’s most convenient airports to reach from its respective city.
For ground transport, passengers have several options. Taxis and rideshare services operate from the forecourt. Car hire is available from desks in the terminal, with major providers such as Avis, Budget, Hertz, and Thrifty. The airport has a paid parking lot for those driving themselves, with both short-term and long-term bays. The car park is wheelchair accessible, as are the terminal entrance and toilets. There is no public bus route directly to the airport, so taxi or rideshare is the most practical option for non-drivers.
Nearby cities include Rockhampton (about 340 kilometres south) and Townsville (roughly 380 kilometres north). The airport is also a key arrival point for visitors to the Whitsunday Islands, with the ferry terminals in Airlie Beach about an hour’s drive north.
Mackay Airport provides a compact but functional range of facilities for travellers. The terminal is wheelchair accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilets. There is a dedicated baggage storage service, useful for passengers wanting to explore Mackay before a late flight or for those on layovers. Toilets include baby changing tables, making the airport family-friendly. The airport offers paid parking, as noted. While specific retail and dining outlets are not detailed in the confirmed amenities, the terminal typically houses a newsagent and a café for light meals and drinks. Passengers will find free Wi-Fi and charging points in the waiting areas. For those with mobility needs, assistance can be arranged through the airline prior to travel.
Mackay is known as the sugar capital of Australia, and the landscape surrounding the airport is dominated by vast sugarcane fields. The region’s economy is heavily based on agriculture (sugar, tropical fruits), mining (coal from the Bowen Basin), and tourism. The Great Barrier Reef lies just offshore, and Mackay is a launch point for reef tours, as well as trips to the Whitsunday Islands, including Hamilton Island. Eungella National Park, about an hour’s drive west, is famous for its platypus population and rainforest walks. The city itself has a pleasant subtropical climate, with a riverfront and a historic town centre. Many travellers use Mackay as a base for exploring the nearby beaches and islands, or for business trips tied to the resources sector.
Mackay Airport is not open around the clock; it operates during scheduled flight times. Passengers should check flight schedules as the terminal may be locked outside these hours. Peak times for passenger traffic are around 5 pm and 9 pm, likely aligning with arrivals and departures. The airport has a website (www.mackayairport.com.au) for up-to-date flight information, car parking details, and facility listings. For enquiries, the airport can be reached by phone at +61 7 4957 0201.
When visiting, allow sufficient time for check-in and security screening, as queues can form during peak hours. While the airport is small, it is efficient and comfortable for regional travel. For any special assistance, contact your airline in advance. Parking fees apply, and payment can be made via card or app at the exit booth.
