Busiest on Mondays around 1 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
This place is amazing! I love planes and Mt dream is to fly a personal plane one day! Best time to go to watch planes is around 10:30 am! Love this airport!
Not my home base, but a very nice towered airport to fly into. In this case, I was going to Pavco for some service. Tower personnel as always friendly here.
Nice little airport. Tower guy was pretty friendly. Self serve gas is pretty easy to get to and FBO services are good. Haven't eaten at the restaurant but I here good things about it. Only negative to this airport is that it's expensive to cross the bridge to Tacoma, but when you fly an airplane across 3 states to get there you'd have to be a real cheap a** to take a star off for that
Great viewing platform, including a speaker that provides audio from the control tower!
Tacoma Narrows Airport (TIW) is a general aviation airport serving the Gig Harbor and Tacoma area in Washington state. Unlike the larger Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac), Tacoma Narrows focuses on private and business aircraft, flight training, and recreational flying. The airport sits on the south side of the Tacoma Narrows, the strait that separates the Kitsap Peninsula from the mainland. It is owned and operated by Pierce County and is a key asset for local pilots and companies needing quick access to the Puget Sound region without the congestion of a major hub.
The airport features a single asphalt runway and a variety of hangars for based aircraft. It does not handle scheduled commercial flights, so travelers using this airport typically arrive via private plane or charter. The airport's location offers stunning views of the Tacoma Narrows bridges and Mount Rainier on clear days.
Tacoma Narrows Airport is located at 1200 Broughton Avenue SE, Gig Harbor, Washington. Gig Harbor is a charming waterfront city on the Kitsap Peninsula, about 10 miles west of Tacoma across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The airport is situated just off State Route 16, making it easily accessible from both Gig Harbor and Tacoma.
For those driving, the airport has a wheelchair-accessible car park. There is no public transit directly to the airport, but rideshare services like Uber and Lyft operate in the area. Taxis are limited but can be arranged. The nearest major city is Tacoma, about a 15-minute drive via the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Seattle is approximately 45 miles to the north, about an hour's drive.
Tacoma Narrows Airport provides essential amenities for passengers and pilots. The terminal building includes a waiting area and restrooms, with wheelchair-accessible toilets. The entrance and car park are also wheelchair-accessible. There are no restaurants or shops inside the terminal, but the nearby Gig Harbor waterfront offers numerous dining and shopping options within a short drive. The airport's FBO (fixed-base operator) provides fueling, hangar space, and pilot services. For passengers, there is a small seating area and flight planning facilities.
Because the airport caters to general aviation, amenities are basic. Travelers should plan accordingly, especially if arriving outside peak hours. The airport's peak hours are typically around 1 pm and 5 pm, when flight activity is highest. Outside those times, the terminal may be quiet or even locked; it's best to coordinate with your flight operator.
The Tacoma Narrows Airport serves the heart of the Puget Sound region, known for its natural beauty, maritime heritage, and outdoor recreation. Gig Harbor is a historic fishing village turned tourist destination, with a picturesque harbor full of boats, waterfront parks, and art galleries. The area is famous for its views of Mount Rainier, the Olympic Mountains, and the Tacoma Narrows bridges.
Travelers to this region often come for boating, fishing, hiking, and exploring the many islands of Puget Sound. Tacoma, just across the bridge, offers museums like the Museum of Glass and the LeMay – America’s Car Museum, as well as the Point Defiance Park and Zoo. The airport's location makes it an ideal entry point for those visiting the Olympic Peninsula, including destinations like Port Townsend and Hurricane Ridge.
Tacoma Narrows Airport is not open 24/7; hours vary by season and day. It is recommended to check the official Pierce County website for current operating hours. The airport can be reached by phone at +1 253-853-5844 for general inquiries. The website (https://www.piercecountywa.gov/1624/Tacoma-Narrows-TIW) provides information on based operators, hangar rentals, and airport rules.
There are no on-site hotels, but Gig Harbor offers several lodging options within minutes. If you are arriving by private aircraft, be sure to contact the FBO in advance for parking and services. For departing passengers, allow extra time to reach the airport, especially during peak traffic on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
