Busiest on Mondays around 6 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
Purchased a sunset flight in the Tiger Moth for dad's birthday. The whole experience was fantastic from start to finish, would highly recommend
Used my Virgin Flying experience voucher here. Was an amazing experience after take off I was handed the controls for the entire flight and landing. The pilot with me had amazing knowledge of the area and made sure to inform me of all the history of the ground below as we flew over. You never actually get to see the wonders of our land until your 2000 feet in the air above seeing it with the best view one can have. I will definitely be getting another 1+ hour session(possibly many more) from this air field and hopefully sooner then later.
I had a great gliding experience with Barry, Phil and sue! They are all such nice people, with a real passion for flying. Thank you again guys
If you want a truly exhilarating experience then book your 1 hr lesson now. It will be money well spent. You can see Dartmoor on one side and all the way up to Exmoor the other. It's like nothing you've seen before and Barry is an excellent instructor.
Eaglescott Airfield (EGHU) is a small general aviation airstrip situated in the rural parish of Umberleigh, in the county of Devon, South West England. Unlike major commercial airports serving scheduled passenger flights, Eaglescott primarily caters to private pilots, flying clubs, and light aircraft operations. It is used for recreational flying, flight training, and private travel within the UK. The airfield features a single grass runway and has a friendly, community-focused atmosphere typical of many British general aviation strips. While it does not handle commercial airliners, it plays an important role in the local aviation community, providing a base for enthusiasts and a gateway to the North Devon countryside for those arriving by light aircraft.
Eaglescott Airfield is located approximately 2 miles north of the village of Umberleigh, and about 7 miles south-east of the market town of Barnstaple. Barnstaple is the main administrative and commercial centre of North Devon, with a population of over 30,000. The airfield sits in the picturesque valley of the River Taw, surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The nearest major road is the A377, which connects Barnstaple to Exeter. From Barnstaple, take the A377 towards Exeter, then turn off at Umberleigh and follow signs to the airfield. Access is via narrow country lanes, so drivers should be cautious. There is no public transport directly to the airfield; the nearest railway station is in Umberleigh, on the Tarka Line (Exeter to Barnstaple), about 2 miles away. Passengers arriving by train may need to arrange a taxi or pickup. For those driving, the airfield offers a car park which is confirmed to be wheelchair-accessible. The postcode for satnav is EX37 9BS.
Eaglescott Airfield is a basic airstrip with limited facilities, but essential amenities are available. The airfield has a toilet, which is kept clean and functional. Both the entrance and the car park are wheelchair-accessible, making it easier for passengers with reduced mobility. There is no passenger terminal, large waiting lounge, or food and drink outlets. Pilots and passengers should plan to bring their own refreshments. For flight planning, the airfield provides a small office and a weather briefing area. Aircraft maintenance and fuel (Mogas) are available by prior arrangement. The airfield is also equipped with a radio for communication (frequencies available on charts). Please note that facilities may be limited during quieter periods or when the airfield is closed.
North Devon is renowned for its stunning coastline, sandy beaches, and the Exmoor National Park. The area around Eaglescott is quintessential English countryside: gentle hills, narrow lanes, and patchwork fields. The nearby Exmoor National Park offers heather moorlands, deep wooded valleys, and wild ponies. Popular activities include walking, cycling, horse riding, and wildlife watching. The North Devon Coast, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, features dramatic cliffs and secluded coves. Towns like Barnstaple provide shopping and dining, while the coastal village of Ilfracombe has a harbour, historic lighthouse, and attractions such as the Verity statue. The Tarka Line railway, named after Tarka the Otter from Henry Williamson’s novel, offers scenic journeys along the River Taw. For aviators, the region is popular for pleasure flying over the coast and moorland. Eaglescott serves as a convenient base for exploring this part of Devon.
Eaglescott Airfield is not open every day; it operates on specific days and hours, predominantly during daylight hours. The confirmed peak hours are 6pm to 7pm, which likely correspond to when aircraft movements are highest. It is essential to check the airfield’s schedule in advance, especially if planning a visit. The airfield can be contacted by phone at +44 1769 520404 or through its website: http://www.eaglescott-airfield.com/. For pilots, prior permission is required (PPR) for landing. The airfield does not have air traffic control; pilots should self-announce on the published frequency. The surface of the runway is grass, so conditions may be affected by weather; the airfield is closed during prolonged wet spells or when the ground is waterlogged. Passengers should be aware that this is a small, private airfield with minimal staff. Plan ahead, bring essentials, and enjoy the peaceful Devonshire setting.
